Curl refresher
Hello ladies. I wanted to know what is a good way to refresh your curls in the morning? My hair is very dry when I first wake up. Also what is a better oil than coconut because my hair tends to soak that right up instantly.

Re: Curl refresher
You can use a spray bottle with water, condish and oil. You can also run your hair under the shower stream and shake it to refresh the curls.

Ok cool. But will using water daily frizz or dry my hair?

Re: Curl refresher
I agree with @freckledmom... a spray bottle filled with water, light conditioner and an oil should do the trick.
Some alternatives to coconut oil that I like are:

- Olive Oil
- Jojoba Oil
- Castor Oil (thickest of the three)

Re: Curl refresher
Thanks alot. I will try this solution I'm the morning and definitely buy a new oil this week. I think from over washing my hair so much and years of coloring it has stripped the moisture out of my hair

Re: Curl refresher
I love a mix of 80% water, 10% EVOO and 10% aloe Vera juice/gel. You may add two to five percent glycerin and lower the amount of water and/or aloe Vera juice/gel. I love it.

I haven't tried the Aloe Vera juice in my water mix, but I bought a big bottle of it for my Kimmaytube leave in conditioner mix. I'll have to try it in my water mixture.
Also, I use Ms. Jessie's Buttercreme. I've had it for a while, but I didn't like the smell. One morning, my curls were very dry, so I decided to give it another chance. Although I still don't like the smell, it does really great on my two and three day old twist outs. It makes my curls look shiny and fresh.

Re: Curl refresher
Thank you so much ladies. I will be trying all these tactics this week. The dry curls in the morning are really stressing me out!

Re: Curl refresher
I use distilled water in my spray bottle. I find that gives me better results than plain tap water. City water usually has a lot of chemicals like fluoride and chlorine, these are drying to the hair. Well water has a lot of minerals and if you have a water softener, it has salt too. Distilled water does not taste good, but it has all the nasties filtered out and is better for your hair.

Thanks Madeaj! I forgot to mention that I used distilled H2O as well. Tap water will start to smell if you leave it in the bottle too long.

Re: Curl refresher
I've been meaning to get distilled water for my hair too.
I use the same ingredients in my refresher as Chrslvsbks - but less water and a little more glycerin. I love it. My hair is so moisturized, but it's back in the 80's here in Atlanta so this is working. Not sure about the glycerin once the temp drops. I'll probably do what Chrs is doing.

Re: Curl refresher
Glycerin is a humectant. I purchase vegetable glycerin for $6 at the BSS. Here's a great article about humectants.

Emartini - The water and conditioner dried me out too.
Scroll up and maybe try what I'm doing, but if it's getting cool where you are watch the glycerin.

Re: Curl refresher
When was the last time you clarified? If you have not recently do so, then DC with best moisturizing conditioner.Emartini04 wrote:Hey ladies. I tried the water and conditioner method and once it dried my hair looked even worse(dried out)!

Try adding oil to the mix (no more than 10% of mix).
Try adding more water, using distilled water.
Try adding a little aloe vera gel/juice (no more than 15% of mix).
Re: Curl refresher
Ok will try that tonight. Thanks

Re: Curl refresher
I co-wash DAILY!!! One of the most vital component needed for our hair is water. You will not dry it out. If you have dry hair it may be the products you are using. Try switching to see if there is a difference. I love Kinky Curly products and have found Aubrey Organics also works for me.
As far as a refresher I merely get in the shower but if it's in the middle of the day or on the weekend I my just run my hair under some water to refresh the curls.

Re: Curl refresher
Right now Im using Curls brand Lavish Curls moisturizer. It's to help revive second day hair, and give you some moisture.
Yesterday I did my first braid out with it, and I LOVE the results.
But I use it everyday to revive my puffs and such. You also could use any of the pump bottle stuff, I switched between Say Sof Fro and the 14 in 1 thinned out with a little water.

Re: Curl refresher
Hey. I use curls mositurizer, water, and jane carter leave in conditoner.
I like using these because all the good stuff is already in it...no mixing required...I alternate depending on my mood. I don't like to go to work with wet hair.
Also if dryness is your issue. When you wash your hair put oil and a creme in you hair before you apply a leave in conditioner. This process will help seal in mositure. That sounds like the problem to me. Go to naturally curly.com and read up on sealing hair.

Re: Curl refresher
I'm going to try everything that is listed on this page. I went to trader joes after work today and got me some nourish spa conditioner, evoo, and apple cider (for my scalp). I'm going back tomorrow to pick up some aloe juice gel and vegetable glycerin for a refresher. The location I went too did not have those last two products.
@ curly kid - Jane Carter spray is good but frizzes my hair bad. Only use it when I want to stretch my curls and that's very rare.

My mix is similar

My mix consist of 50/50 water & aloe vera gel/juice, and 2-3 tbsp veg glycerin. Sometimes I add a few drops essential oils to the mix (spearmint, eucalyptus or peppermint is what I have on hand)
I usually spray my hair first (not dripping wet), work spray in massaging scalp, seal with the EVCO, light spray (mist) again.
I usually have NICE moisture ALL DAY. Curls stay soft.
