These darn relaxed ends...dreading with the natural part
Ladies-I lost SO much hair detangling yesterday. I did it in the shower under running water while using Aussie Moist. The problem is that my relaxed ends had become like dread locks in sense. The only thing I could do what comb/rip it out!!
But my hair feels so soft and better than ever...I did a braid out afterwards. Is it normal to loose a massive amount of hair?? I detangle on average of once every 1-2 weeks. I co-wash every couple of days though...

maybe you should detangle more often. are you starting at the hair ends when you detangle? using a wide tooth comb? what helps me detangle is adding a little conditioner to my hair while shampoo is still in before rinsing. i then proceed to condition, detangle and rinse.

Tylersmom,
Shedding hair is normal (although only up to a certain amount, 50-100 hairs a day max). So, if you're only detangling once every 1-2 weeks then in one detangling session you are seeing the shedding of 7-to-14 days x 50-to-100 hairs = 350 to 1,400 hairs!
I agree with mahoganytresses' recommendations, and would definitely recommend detangling more often. This will help reduce the "dreading" as well as the amount of hair you collect at each detangling session. I detangle whenever I co-wash my hair, which is at least twice a week. Sometimes I have only a few hairs shed (like 5), when on other days I shed 15-30.
Also, you might want to try adding more moisture and conditioner with more slip to your relaxed ends before you detangle. This will also help prevent any breakage that might be happening along with the shedding (which is whole hairs detaching from the root).
HTH!

Re: These darn relaxed ends...dreading with the natural part
How do you wash your hair? Do you wash it in sections? Are you combing from tip to root?? Do you prepoo?Meaning comb the relaxed ends first and then work your way up. Just some questions that may help..BUT this was one of the main reasons I decided to BC. I transitioned for 10 months and my relaxed ends and my natural hair were at war!!! Literally, it was crazy and I couldnt deal anymore and I knew it was time and I did it. But there are some things you can try and if you dont detangle often it might just be hair that hasnt had a chance to shed because of the style you are wearing. For example, I had cornrows in for about two weeks while wearing a half wig, took them out and it was wayyyy more hair than I would usually see if lets say I was wearing a puff or something like that, but thats what happens cause my hair was like held hostage for two weeks...lol..The results of the braid out was sick by the way..
Also I learned that washing my hair in sections and also doing some sort of detangling session before I start to wash helps me out A LOT. Say Wednesday is my wash day, I will section my hair into four huge sections apply a conditioner of your choice, some oil of my choice and then break those sections down into smaller ones and braid them up...Let that sit with or without a cap for a few minutes and then go ahead with shampooing(if its that week) and conditioning, deep condition, etc. All the while my hair is still nice and detangled. Leave the braids in and take out or take them out and do your original style...Its longer but worth it in the end..
DAMN THAT WAS LONG....Sorry I could talk all day about what I've learned so far. I transitioned for 10 months and have been natural for 4..So 14 months no perm!!!

I also agree w/ the other ladies about pre poo-ing or letting the conditioner sit for a while on your hair I'm still transitioning (almost 10 months) but I've had issues with detangling which I think was mostly due to the little bit of highlighted ends I had. I noticed after I started cutting away the colored ends my hair was sooo much easier to comb through, the color was causing it to matt up get all knotty.
