Your Henna Formula
I would love to know everyones henna formula and what works for you and what doesnt work for you.
The last henna formula i did is as follows:
80% lemon juice to 20% water
1 3/4 pack of punjabi prime henna (mehandi)
a couple of drops of orange oil or spearmint oil when my scalp is crazy itchin
1 1/2 tablespoons honey
Oooohhh recipe for dry as the desert hair with all that lemon juice in it! Gave me great color, but all that lemon juice dried out my hair.

Re: Your Henna Formula
I have allergic reactions to henna when it is mixed with acids (orange juice, lemons or apple cider vinegar). I was recently telling 2 Indian ladies about it.
One lady advised me to just use plain water and let sit overnight. The other lady told me to use plain yogurt and let sit overnight.
I recently did a henna treatment with the yogurt. I used a greek plain yogurt. My scalp loved this method. No itching at all! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] The aplication was so easy- no running or drip.

50 grams Henna for African Hair*
Enough lemon juice to moisten henna.
Enough water to make it into a pudding like consistency.
I let it sit overnight
*Thinking about increasing it to 100grams, but I don't have any complaints.

Re: Your Henna Formula
So my Henna just arrived today! YAYYY! Not sure when I will do the process, but I plan on it sometime this week! I ordered the Jamilla Henna from Butters-N-Bars. It came with mixing directions, and I see where it says that you can mix it with lemon juice and says that orange juice or water can also be used. I had planned to just mix it with green tea and honey, which is what most of the people on here have suggested. Was just curious to know does anybody add in the lemon juice?
Also, is it necessary to let the mix sit over night? I was just going to mix it, apply, and let in sit in my hair overnight! Again, this is what I've seen from others...I just wanna make sure Im all good before I do this!

@Natural83
I added a little lemon juice and honey after I had let the mix sit for and hour while I was detangling in the shower. I let the mix sit on my hair overnight (applied henna at 6pm, rinsed at 11am) and the color difference showed along with the shine, strength and dryness.
I used Jamila too! but from Mehandi.com. It was a $1-$2 more expensive, so I think I'm gonna start buying mine from Butters-n-Bars too.

You can put whatever in your henna mix....HAve a good time pampering yourself [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Re: Your Henna Formula
last time I used yogurt, a few tablespoons of acv and orange juice, and some honey. I put way too much acid becausse my hair was hella dry. I also read that yogurt isn't good for your hair because it gives dandruff something to munch on [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] This time im going to try curly nikki's mix. i was wondering if i can sub the green tea with lipton or arizona premixed green tea.

Cherry's Henna Formula
Mine is super basic .. COFFEE for a rich dark brown color and nice scent
I have two henna's that I use (trade off each month)
Rajasthani BAQ henna and Yeman
I boil instant coffee with 3 tablespoons
1 packet of Henna
Leave overnight on counter
I usually add enough coffee until it's like a medium thick paste
Before putting it in my hair I put in a tablespoon of almond oil, olive oil and clay. I add a little more coffee till it looks like fudge and is the consistency of creamy frosting
I wash my hair and towel dry it and then leave the henna in my hair for at least 3 hours
I rinse it out and than deep condition and braid for defined curls
I hennad my hair this weekend and here's a photo

Re: Your Henna Formula
Hi Everyone!!
So now I'm mad where in the world were all of you when I held my first annual 'Henname' contest, lol
Everyone's beautiful, I'd like to share my favorite mix
I use 200 grams of Jamila '09 henna
lemon juice (or citric acid and water)
ohhhh about 30-50 grams of hibiscus flowers
Clove or Lavender EO if I don't want to smell the henna
sometimes when I steep the hibiscus in the lemon juice I toss a few cinnamon sticks in it to liven up the highlights...Paprika kicks it up a notch as well. I always let it to sit in a warm place for dye release (Jameelah is pretty easy, dye release in a couple of hours in a warm enough spot). I experience no drying from this mix whatsoever and if I have a little paste leftover you can always use it for body art [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: Your Henna Formula
I've finally found my ultimate henna mix:
1 bag (150 g) of henna*
1 box (50 g) of maka
enough herbal tea (usually hibiscus based) to make a pudding like consistency
*Karishma or any other type that includes other herbs such as amla, shikakia, aritha and bhringraj
I leave this overnight to release the dye. I may add a little yogurt or oil before applying the next day. I then sleep in the henna to get the best dye transfer. The maka is the key to supersoft, easy to detangle hair. It's my secret ingredient! I can't recommend it enough!

Re: Your Henna Formula
My grandma gives me always her home made henna, from Morocco. And my mom makes it with olive oil and eggs! And leave this for a whole day! And if you really want to have soft result also a night!
I don't put it in my hair anymore, because I get really red/ orange color of it! But it makes my hair very very shiny and soft! When I was young my did this always in my hair and all the kids made fun of me. Beacause I had a red afro, and a light skin!

Re: Your Henna Formula
I've only done this once so far but my hair seems to like it:
200g BAQ Henna from Yemen
2 cups ReaLemon lemon juice
{I only ended up using maybe 150g; I froze the rest}
I let it sit overnight (from about 8-9pm to about 10am)
Applied....left in from 12:30pm to 5:30pm (saran wrapped and shower capped--I ran my blow dry over the wrap almost every hour b/c I felt my body heat wasnt doing enough lol);
rinsed, washed, detangled, etc
and voila! Super soft auburn tinted tresses lol

Re: Your Henna Formula
i mix my henna (karishma) with lustrasilk aloe conditioner, coconut oil and water. i do more of a gloss then a full on treatment. i let it sit on my hair for about 2 hours and then co-wash with pantene pro v smooth. i'm considering trying this with yogurt or adding honey to the mix.

Re: Your Henna Formula
I always mix with coffee, tea or indigo for a darker color. I think red is too 'attention' getting with my coloring. I like more quiet looks ..
Thanks for the compliment on my hair. I LOVE yours and have always wanted thick hair. It's why I love my henna. It makes it look so thick.
