First Curly Summer!
This is my first summer as a natural curly and I'm facing problems I never dealt with during the winter. One of them being the humidity. Its making my hair frizz like nothing I've ever seen before! Parts of my hair don't have a definite curl pattern which I fixed with twist outs but the frizz just cancels it out. Looks like one big poofy mess.
I think its also causing more shrinkage than normal. but I'm not completely sure since I switched from Yes/Carrots to Aubrey condish and Hair Rules to Kinky Curly the same week the temperature/humidity sky rocketed. it may just be the products.
How is your summer going so far (hair wise)? What changes have you had to make to your routine?
Fellow teens unite!!!! (fully aware of how corny that sounds but i'm leaving it anyways)

Re: First Curly Summer!
that last line literally made me LOL.
I don't have much of a problem with frizz since most of my hair is still relaxed but my hair is a little longer than shoulder length and is very THICK so I just pull it up into a ponytail most of the time. The heat here in SC is unbearable and I just can't deal with my hair right now. I'm trying to figure out a way to wear it out without it being so irritating but i haven't figured out anything yet.

Do you use any oils? The days my hair are the most defined is when I add moisture like crazy then add an oil (olive oil or shea) to seal my hair. I hope this helps... I live in South Florida and we stay humid LOL.

Re: First Curly Summer!
I wanna wash it but I'm gonna wear it out because the lady MURDERED my hair with the flat iron and I'm kinda like if my hair's gonna go through all that torture I better wear it straight for a while.. On the plus side though, the henna treatments are starting to work because my hair is sooo soft and shiny

Is your hair black/really really dark? My hair was brownish/black so the henna made my hair auburn inside and red outside. I luv it tho
Dang girl ur getting thoughts into my head... I really wanna go to the beach tomorrow lol

Re: First Curly Summer!
black on the inside (LOL) funny funny
use it without an acid next time. I doubt that alone will get any lighter but I guess spending time in the sun and that combined should give you a nice hue.
Oh i have this picture of my red curls in all their glory lol. Gonna try to find it

Re: First Curly Summer!
yes'mam. Amla is very acidic as well and the brand i get from the Indian store is a mix of Henna, Amla, Branji, and Brahmi (didn't check the spellings, they might be a lil off) so my hair has gotten a lot darker from my first mix but it's still really red at times.
Oh wow. My mom took me to JC Penny to get some professional pictures with my sister (who's graduating pre-school) and she almost flipped when I told her I had to turn in my gown to get my diploma LOL

Re: First Curly Summer!
oh that IS CurlyNikkis mix to the T lol
the green tea would be the acid that she uses to create a dye release (i think). I gotta check this out though because i know the acid affects the color of the henna but idk about tha potency

Re: First Curly Summer!
what i think it means is the henna needs a couple of hours for the lawsome molecule to do its thing with the acid. Im not sure though
have you read the henna for hair e-book? It's like 60 pages of henna knowledge

Re: First Curly Summer!
LOL when you have time i guess :]. I looked it over and the acid isn't needed for the softness or deep conditionishingness it just gives it a darker color so yea just do a henna rinse without it next time

Re: First Curly Summer!
I went camping this weekend and the first night, IT POURED RAINING !!! so that definitely set the humidity and the next two days were scorching.. My hair held up pretty well when using my homemade hair spray [contains: EVCO, EVOO, Jojoba oil, Grapeseed Oil, HEHH conditioner, honey, and water] it didn't frizz too bad and it didn't poof too much, nothing that I couldn't control.
So thus far its not too bad... it's just swimming that is getting to me lol

Re: First Curly Summer!
@krissy and afrochic:
the acid helps release the color in henna. if you want henna for color you should use an acid (green tea, lemons w/e). also the longer you leave it in your hair and the more often you henna the stronger the color will be.
if you just want to henna for its conditioning properties do a gloss (mix henna with conditioner). you'll get more conditioning and less color.
dye release is the color. its why when you first make your mix it looks like greenish but after a few hours it turns browish. the dye molecules in the henna are activated
@ebbz: maybe you should try a faux-curly bob look lol
do w/e you do to curly your straight ends (TO or BO or w/e) and pin your ends up underneath. maybe use a hair tie to keep your ends together and pin it up that way. if you have layers i feel this will work nicely if not maybe rock it a bit messy and let a few strands loose to disguise the fold under.
this way it looks like your hair is out and it wont touch your neck (which is really irritating in the heat) and you dont have to cut it short (always appreciate the ability to put your hair in a pony!!!)
i hope all this makes sense i kind of just made it up right now. i dont know if it'll work but in theory it a great idea! lmao
