Hola NaturalChica! Just wanted to say that I've checked out your blog and YT channel. You definitely have a new subscriber. Love the hair hermana!
Day 4: Accessorizing your hair with your OWN creations : )
Day 4: Accessorizing your hair with your OWN creations : )
When I first did the BC, I REALLY started getting into hair accessories and it was growing to be a costly obsession! One day, I walked into a store and saw these beautiful feather headbands, only to look at the price tag and see that it cost over $15!! As a grad student, there was no way I was going to shell out that kind of money for a hair accessory so I decided I was going to try and make my own.
It was sooo much FUN!
The materials to make them were relatively inexpensive and I purchased feathers, glue gun, glue sticks, some plastic gems and some felt and went to work! I purchased everything from Michael's. Since then, I have started making beaded bobbypins and feather snap clips to add to my growing collection of hair accessories.
Tutorial I did on YouTube showing how to make your own
Do any of you make your own accessories too?

Re: NaturalChica
Since I cannot purchase hair products, I may try to make hair accessories. I am definitely going to check out your video. $15 for a headband, can we say RIDICULOUS.
I will check back to see how the moisturizing spray is going for you.

Day 5: Natural Hair Community on Twitter
If you have a Twitter account, I hope you're aware of the STRONG presence of the natural hair community there. There are literally thousands of women on there at different stages of their natural hair journey: transitioning, recently BC-ed to the veterans.
If you're ever on Twitter and want to join in on the natural hair discussion, all you have to do is search for "#naturalhair", which is the tagging system used to relate comments on a similar topic. You'll find people tweeting all day about all kinds of issues related to natural hair.
On Sunday evenings at 10pm EST, there is a natural hair chat night that lasts for an hour. By using the "#naturalhair" tag, everyone can follow each others' comments and share and receive advice. All you have to do is make sure that your tweets are unprotected for the night so people that don't follow you can see your comments as well. I've definitely received some very useful tips from those LIVE discussions.
If you're on Twitter, you can find me by my SN: NaturalChica

*HAIR UPDATE*
Even though I REALLY REALLY didn't want to. I co-washed my hair last night with Trader Joe's Nourish & Spa (LOVE THIS STUFF!!) so I could re-twist my hair. I'm going out of town for MLK Weekend (Happy Bday to Dr. King - He would have been 81 today) and I didn't feel like packing my bottle of conditioner and worry about washing my hair to get it to behave over the weekend when I didn't have access to my FULL stash of hair goodies.
So...I did my twists again last night and really wanted to stop in the middle of them. But hey..once you start...you know the deal. I twisted again with my homemade mixture of cocoa butter/shea butter/coconut oil mixed with some of my favorite natural and essential oils. It holds my twists really well and also gives a bit of healthy sheen to them. I'll probably take my twists down later this afternoon for the twist-out.
Anywho, ladies have a wonderful weekend! In honor of Dr. King, I leave you with one of my favorite quotes from him:
"I submit to you that if a man has not discovered something that he will die for, he isn't fit to live." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (Speech in Detroit, Michigan) (1963-06-23)

What name brand oils do you buy at Whole Foods? The only brand I have seen in my local WF is NOW and I searched CN for reviews on NOW and didn't find any. Though I don't believe the WF in my city carries all the brands that larger cities may carry because it doesn't carry AAA. I ended up ordering my oils online.
Re: NaturalChica
If you check out NaturalChica's YouTube Channel (NikkiMae2003), she is gonna be MIA for a little while.
I've tried the NOW brand and I like it. I have the NOW Vegetable Glycerin and the Jojoba oil.

I wish I could tell you but I don't really measure. I just keep adding until I get the right consistency. If I had to estimate though, I would probably say about 1 tbsp of cocoa butter to 1 cup of shea butter.

So at Whole Foods, I buy from both Wyndmere and NOW. Both have worked just fine for me.
Re: NaturalChica
Sorry I've been in MIA for a bit. Debating if I should try and post every day this week. Have a lot on my plate at the moment! : )
