Baby Food
My son will be 6 months on the 9th of this month and we're thinking he's about ready for solids. i plan to make his babyfood but am conflicted on what I should start him out on. I'm thinking sweet potatoes. What did your little ones eat first and how did it go?
Re: Baby Food
I started my little man out with green beans. He was a little hesitant, but after a few bites he loved it!! He really loves his veggies nowadays. He's 9 months by the way.
Re: Baby Food
I've got 3 kids. In my experience, it's best to start them off on non sweets. If you start them off on sweeter foods, it's harder to get them to eat the other stuff. That's so great you;re going to make his food.
Re: Baby Food
Yes, that is great you're going to make baby food! You really don't need to buy those jars...

I chose the sweet potato/yam (its the same thing right?) because its not sweet and hubby and I both enjoy them so its something we eat regularly. I wouldn't be adding any sugar or seasoning to his. Someone who shall remain nameless (DADDY) let him taste some sweet potato pie back in November. He seemed quite pleased but I had to pop his daddy for giving it to him. lol
Re: Baby Food
A sista I know that homeschools all 5 of her children purees her babys fruits and veggies and puts it in ice trays so she has nice sized portions that she can just pull out as needed. I think that's a great idea. Since I just got a food processor its about to be on!!
@NikG...how old was little man when he started solids?
@Learnintolove...I like that I can know exactly whats in his food if I make it.

Re: Baby Food
I started my son off with cereal mixed with breastmilk around 5 months. Then around 7 months I started him with veggies first, then the fruits. He wasnt ready for baby food until 7 months. He would always gag.

Re: Baby Food
I started my little one on cereal and breastmilk around 5/6 months. Then peas pureed. Then green beas. Then squash. Then zucchini. We went through a lot of veggies (I tried to space them at least 2-3 days apart so you can see if there are any allergies.) Then we moved to fruits. After a while I would add a little seasoning -as she got older and became interested in what we were eating. I used the ice tray method also and bought some mini storage containers on Amazon for freezing. She's a good eater (to the point now she needs her own plate because she is not sharing). She eats pretty much what we eat except for the bad stuff like french fries and soda. I do let he eat a little cookie or cake if we have it, but she's not a cookie monster like her daddy.

Yes...I wanted to make sure he wasnt allergic.

AfrikanLatina, that's the way to go! When you start having lots of children you get frugal and thrifty like that. It comes with the territory..
I also home school.

Re: Baby Food
I made all my baby food for my 2nd son and he started baby cereal and oatmeal at 4 months with breast milk. Once he started with the fruits and veggies, I started with avocado, banana, applesauce, sweet potato, sweet peas, pears.
I bought a food processor and referred to this website a lot!

Re: Baby Food
I made all my sons' baby food as well. I wasn't trying to be frugle. I did not want to give him any processed foods. I don't know what is in those jars....lol. And baby and young children are more prone to absorbing toxins than adults (FACT).
I started them off with greens first because it was recommended to start with the non sweet foods first. I also introduced meats last. I did one food at a time for like 4-5 days then switched to another food. I started combing foods once I found they had tried all the basic fruits and vegs, that is when it really was fun. I did not see it as a burden or time consuming. I just prepared their meals when I made our (husband and I) meals.
@AL, I have heard of the ice tray method. But never got around to trying it.
But just remember the foods you puree have no preservative. So cannot keep in the frige long. I tried to make their foods weekly, but this will vary as the child's appetite increases. Also remember to separate the portion that you will feed your child from the batch. Once you dip your spoon in the food and into his mouth, you have inserted bacteria into the food. So do not save or reuse already eaten food. That is ok for adults but not children. They will get sick.
Just my 2 cents [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: Baby Food
Ditto what Intelligent said re: portions & saving food. I also never got around to the tray method. I would make maybe a 12oz batch, portion out some for the next couple of days & freeze the rest.
Re: Baby Food
The ice tray helps to keep you from wasting too much when they first start eating. Since the portions are small if he decided he doesn't want it all you just end up dumping a little.
My little one went through stages, one day she would eat 1-2 "cubes" of food at a time and other days just a few bits.
Don't try to force him to eat the amount you have heated/prepared. He'll let you know exactly how much he wants.
Now my little one is in a "feed me Semore" stage if she sees food she smiles gets happy and opens her mouth to get some.

That site quickly went under my bookmarks. Thanks Jamaica. I'm planning to breastfeed for at least a year. I didn't even think of the avocado as one of the veggies we could try. I just started liking avocado within the last few years. I want him to try everything but I know that just because he doesn't like a food now doesn't mean he won't like it when he gets older. ;
Re: Baby Food
I breastfeed for a little over a year (my doctor wasn't too happy), but even now if she sees me getting dressed she'll come over and act like she wants to nurse then start laughing. My husband is like NO NO! She finds him hiliarious.
Re: Baby Food
Mine was doing something like that too. It's like he remembered he used to do it, but can't imagine doing it now. He'd start to come up and then look at me like, did I really do that? LOL! Re: Baby Food
I only breastfeed my son 6 months and he still likes to put his hands in my shirt sometimes. My hubby always tell him, "Get your hands out there SON!" [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
