Perm in a Pill?
http://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2009/12/08/Scientists-discover-curly-hair-gene/UPI-45251260308059/
RISBANE, Australia, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Researchers at Australia's Queensland Institute of Medical Research said they have discovered the gene responsible for dictating the curliness of hair.
Researcher Professor Nick Martin said his team discovered variations in the trichohyalin gene, which was previously known to have a role in the development of hair follicles, are responsible for the curliness or straightness of hair, the Melbourne Herald-Sun reported Tuesday.
Martin said the discovery could have major implications for hair treatments.
"Potentially we can now develop new treatments to make hair curlier or straighter, rather than treating the hair directly," he said. "I will be discussing this with a major cosmetic company in Paris in January."
He said the find could also have applications in forensic science.
"We might be able to refine identikit pictures, using DNA to say whether the suspect had straight or curly hair," Martin said.

Oh boy, I came across this yesterday and was annoyed. It's just another way to make money off of people's insecurities and I'm particularly concerned for women of color [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I only have this to say: the hair you are born with is the hair that you should have. Jehovah doesn't make mistakes!
Re: Perm in a Pill?
I dont think so! I love the hair that God gave me! I wish it were longer? Is that in a pill?
Re: Perm in a Pill?
they dont say the side effects...you use the pill but get enormous amount of pubic hair...get insane amounts of facial hair....j/k
but i do agree its another way to play on people's insecurities

LMAO @ Lena. A huge amount of pubic hair or facial hair would definitely be an unwanted side effect

WOW!!! Are you serious?? Like someone said in the other thread people are dying of real diseases and scientist are worried about "curing" the curly hair problem. Really?!
Like most of you already said its a play on people insecurites and it will probably have affects with us colored women. Many of us already have insecurities and this "perm pill" will only make it worse. Sickening.
Have you seen the commercials for the prescription you can get to make your eyebrows longer and thicker? Side Effect- possible blindness

Re: Perm in a Pill?
the only reason I would take this pill is to make my curl more consistent; not to straighten my hair. I think if this pill were to be sold it'd be kind of; no it'd be very insulting to the parents and ancestors cause it's like a nonverbal way of saying you don't like the genes you were blessed with/given by them.

Re: Perm in a Pill?
It's really all about lack of self-esteem. That's it, for whatever reason people have these insecurities about "curly" hair and want to straighten it. Now don't get wrong, since I've been natural I have never been "anti-relaxer" I say to each her own. But at least be cognizant of why you chose to relax your hair. I think a lot of women do it just becaue with no actual reasoning behind it. But not only with our hair but also with various other parts of our life. As women, we have insecurites.
Maybe I should have done this as a separate post but I'm challenging all of you including myself to be a role model for those women (young an old) who may be struggling with an insecurity. You never know who's watching you and something you may do or say may improve somebody's day in so many ways.
I'm going to start another thread and we can post some of the things we have said or done to improve the self-esteem in others. This also can be a thread where people can come up with ideas on how to help that young girl who need a little direction etc etc.
Thanks ladies.

Re: Perm in a Pill?
Ladies,
this is pretty deep. I can count off five of my friends who would RUN RUN RUN at the chance to be able to change their curl patterns...
And StacyB I totally agree with you on self esteem issues...

Re: Perm in a Pill?
Why should we want straight her with a perm? Curls are wild and sexy, and when every we want we can get it straight or a looser curl. Just ask a straight headed is she can get curls like ours without a perm!
