Flat Iron vs Pressing Comb
Which is worse?
I was showing someone the consequences of heat damage. The person that I was showing using a stove top pressing comb. She made the comment "yea those flat irons can be bad." I took that to mean they are worse than (stove top) pressing combs. In your opinion what do you think?

Re: Which is worse?
I think it depends on what type of iron/comb you are using. If you are using the electrical version of both the temperature is more controlled but, if you are using the Marcel type or putting the comb on the stove then the temperature of the irons is uncontrolled. In the end both have the potential to damage the hair depending on the person’s skills or lack thereof.
Re: Which is worse?
I have never used a pressing comb and don't know much about them, but I think they are on the same level. Like you said "heat damage is heat damage". My hair has heat damage from using a flat iron though.
Re: Which is worse?
A few years ago I watched my mom use and electric comb and a section of hair broke of immediately and fell to the ground. I have no idea why it happened and I agree heat is heat, but I've never seen that with a flat iron... i'm just sayin lol
Re: Which is worse?
A woman on a biracial hair care group I'm on said her cousin flat ironed her daughters hair and 2 inches of her hair broke off. I'm not sure, but that's what she said....
My hair used to break off very easily when I regularly used a flat iron. But I used it a lot. It wasn't a chunk of hair though, just pieces....

Re: Which is worse?
@jonezy: That actually happened to me a few times. I grew up on hot combs. The comb would be so hot that it would singe the hair immediately, the hair would turn white-ish, and fall off with just a touch.

wow.
she still has the electric comb in her vanity draw, every time I open & see it I have a flash back lol.
My Vote is Hot Comb
I think a hot comb causes more damage.
This is based on experience. An electric hot comb with settings burned my hair completely off about nine years ago. I have not touched one since. I think it is because the appliance goes through your strands. I think of it like this. We are told to stay away from combs with teeth too close together. Then why, oh why would we subject ourselves to the hot comb. The teeth are very close together.
I used the flat iron religiously and likely suffered damage but nothing like what I experienced with the hot comb.
Just my two cents

Re: Which is worse?
I'm hugging my flat iron while typing this by the way!
I think either one as long as the heat is adjustable can be ok! But the old school put on the stove one which I've never seen not burning hot, is a no no!
I've been amazed at how much my flat iron does on the lowest setting. I can't believe I use to use it on the HIGHEST setting! smh!
