Hi, can someone tell me how they use the Shea Amla. I have read nothing but glowing rave reviews about this product, but while my hair feels just okay, it's looks dry and dull. I applied it to clean dry hair, that I applied a little moisturizer to just before applying the Shea Amla. I don't know if that was incorrect, or if I just applied too much. I tend to be heavy handed with products. Please any advice is appreciated. thx

The different reviews are because there are different versions of AfroVeda Products. It's not consistent at all. Every batch this woman makes is different, no recipe, some molded, some have oil that floats, versions changed 4 times on 4 months last year so people will always have different results and raves.

Anyway. You might want to try sealing with different oils. That's with any moisturizer. Different sealing oils can give different results.

Good luck.

@ Makeupvixen..Okay thanks, I just coated each twist with coconut oil, and they do look much better, but really?? I'm just a little surprised that I need to do that after such a rich butter. But I have tried the BARE and the Curl define and apparantly that's what's been missing...I don't have to add anything after using Sweet Nature or Komaza's Califia Moist creme. They are almost to oily (if there is such a thing) But they are made with diff butters, while the AfroVeda is made of Ayurvedic ingredients, so I guess that makes a difference. Thanks for the advice!

Not really. The Qhemet Biologics line is made with Ayurvedic ingredients and no matter how you use thier stuff you wont get dry, dull or brittle results. I use to love AfroVeda but after AfroVeda-Gate, the lies, the price hike, the change in products, they inconsistency I am still on a boycott. Pre October 2010 Shea Amla was one of my favorite until the oils started floating (I have 5 jars of it from different purchases and they all act differently, in the jar and on my hair). It's really just a small warning with this line. There are a lot of controversy about it and what this Mala lady does with her products. I also liked the Totally Twisted, Hemp Seed lock twist and roll, the curl define, bare. I have so many jars of each, until October 2010, that was my last purchase of the crap.

Here's why https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZ-cqH1-S1Q

But since this video Mala has changed the recipe twice and charged more for cheap ingredients. So when people respond you have to take into account that they make be using a different version of what you have.

If you ordered it recently it's more dryong on the hair. The Natural Store was kind enough to send me a free updated 1 oz sample of the Totally Twisted, Shea Amla and Curl Define. I only tried it once and it is nothing like the orginial AfroVeda.

I mix so many products at home too, so the Ayurvedic ingridents really don't have much to so with making your hair dry it the mix itself, Mala screwed up people's hair and wont confess to it.

With this newest version (cerca December 2010) you really do need to seal with it. The only one that didn't require it was the Curl Define. TNHS didn't send me a free sample of the new Bare so I really don't know. I think I have the new Bare from October 2010 but I have never used it. Most of the stuff I had from AfroVeda I mixed more mango butter, shea butter and aloe vera so it no longer seperates and spoils.

Anywho. I do recommend sealing with a different oil to see which one works for you. Sorry for the long post but there is so much back story behind this company it will make your head spin. Plus I think a lot of the girls here know how I feel about AfroVeda's lies but i will still give my honest review on how to make the product work for you and what you can do to tweek it to work the best.

Wow, that was a mouth full...but thank you. This is a new purchase made this month and yes I am aware there was a price increase and then a decrease; but the glowing reviews won me over, I couldn't resist trying them. But I have to tell you that the coconut oil has made a world of difference....omg. I just untwisted a cpl of them and the difference is night and day! So good looking out and again thanks for the advice.

On wash day I section my hair into 4 ponytails and detangle each section and add the shea amla and seal with olive oil. After that I wash and go everyday until the next wash day. So I only use it once every 7-10 days. And I purchased mine about a year ago.

@ Berry3674...really? You wash, detangle and add the Shea Amla then olive oil to wet hair, then do you style and wear it that day? Then repeat your wash every day for seven days without using anymore product?? Wow. Is that your routine, pls correct me if necessary. thx

i use shea amla to moisturize because it is heavy on my hair. I spray with aloe vera juice, and chunky twist/seal with the afroveda shea amla.

Hi Jerseygyrl, so you don't have any issue with dryness or dull looking hair with this method?

I sleep with the 4 moisturized ponytails. The next morning I add activator gel to my dry, stretched hair and quickly run my head under shower. Then I shake my head like crazy. The shaking activates my curls. And since the hair was dry and stretched when I applied the gel I get great definition from the shrinkage from briefly dampening it in the shower. Everyday after that I just run head under shower and shake. Only applying gel to dry hair every other morning or so.
I know a lot of ppl complain about wash and gos drying their hair out. Which is why I only do it on hair that's already been moisturized and sealed. That's also y I only use the curl activator gels. Me and glycerine are bff's, even in the cold a** Ohio winter!!

@ Berry, Cool. Thanks for giving me the rest of the info. I have quite a bit of Afroveda and I'm trying so hard to find a method that my hair will flourish with. Tonight i twisted with the Pur Gelly, without adding any more Shea Amla, being that I had already twisted with it 2 nights in a row. I felt there was enough Shea Amla on my hair already. I'm trying to figure this thing out. Too many people love this stuff too much, I'm sure it's something I'm doing wrong. Last night the Coconut oil really helped with shine, but it didn't take too long today and my hair looked like a dry frizzy poof.
