Hair clinic for teens
Hey ladies. I am going to put together a hair clinic during lunch for my 8th grade students. I am planning on kicking this off in February. Plese help me get some ideas as to what to talk about. These girls have gotten so interested in my hair that they are very interested in knowing more. Here is what I have so far:
1. discuss misconceptions
2. look at styling tools that may cause unknown damage (teeth of combs, etc)
3. look at chemicals that can damage (perms/color/heat)
4. taking care of our hair whether permed or natural
5. self esteem and hair
6. give some hair diaries out
7. have a drawing for hair goodies
8. split ends and how to deal
9. the good and bad about weave
10. cute natural hair styles
I know I am not going to change the world but maybe I can plant a seed somewhere in those cute little brains of theirs!
I appreciate the ideas. I am going to post this in the teen section too. They will know what other teens want to know!

Re: Hair clinic for teens
If possible, I would try to get parents eligible to attend. Some of these teens can't make decisions to change because of lack of parental support, lack of natural hair knowledge from the parents, and no financial foundation to get the products/hair accessories, etc. Those insecurities and misconceptions about natural hair go back generations. I'm pretty sure some of the mothers are relaxed, wearing extensions, or are wearing their hair well, but have no idea that they have other options. Men carry those same misconceptions about hair as well. I think it would be a great bonding situation and self-reflection exercise for the teens and their parents.
