Which products to buy for ADDING protein?
I mentioned in another forum that I don't like deep conditioning because it makes my wet hair feel mushy. Someone said that indicates a need for protein, so what are some good products to add protein? Any suggestions are appreciated!
*I am a vegetarian and I know I'm not eating enough protein right now, so could that be a contributing factor?

What are your dietary sources of protein? I am 90% raw so I was wondering what you ate. I do eat seitan and tempeh for my protein. Here is a good site that may help you.

Thanks!
I eat beans and I eat tofu and soy "meat" substitutes. I eat eggs. I'm just not sure I'm getting the appropriate amounts of protein. Sometimes I feel like I'm starving and could eat an elephant. I get plenty of veggies and only drink water, but yeah...I think my protein is off somehow.
ETA: I just glanced at the website and THANK YOU. It's just what I need. I appreciate it.

Re: Which products to buy for ADDING protein?
Aphogee products are good for adding protein. I use the provitamin leave in conditioner and i know they have a protein reconstructor and some other products that you can use for protein treatments. But i would look up some more reviews on them because of course, not everyone's hair reacts the same way to the same products. I heard many good reviews about them though and I've had good results with the leave in. It's a good detangler as well.

I use the Nexxus Emergencee when I need protein. Its similar to the Aphogee protein treatment but doesn't smell as strong.

@Krazycoils can you tell me more about the Nexxus Emergencee?

Hey jadore04,
Nexxus Emergencee is a strong protein treatment similar to the Aphogee treatment without the smell of the Aphogee. I apply it after I shampoo and sit under the dryer until my hair becomes hard then I rinse and deep condition. I purchased mine from Walgreens and use it as needed. I've used it in the past to help with shedding.

The Aphogee Leave In doesn't have a strong smell, at least not in my opinion but I don't know about the other products like the Reconstructor or the other conditioners.
Re: Which products to buy for ADDING protein?
I am looking for a stronger protein treatment. I picked up Giovanni Smooth As Silk Extreme Protein Hair Infusion today. I am gonna try it this week. The directions say to apply it to clean hair for 3-10 minutes and rinse.
Do you think I need to do a deep conditioning treatment after that?

I was referring to the reconstructor which is the hard protein treatment. I've smelled the leave-in and it doesn't smell.

Hey Lynnie,
To be on the safe side I would. I couldn't tell if this was referred to as a reconstructor or not. With it saying Extreme Protein it just had me wondering if it was considered a hard protein treatment. My nexxus emergencee I use also says to leave in for 1-2 minutes(I actually leave in 10 minutes) and rinse but I deep condition afterwards to prevent that hard feeling in my hair.

Lynnie I used the Giovanni Xtreme last week. I didn't do a DT after and my hair felt fine. Let me know what you decide.

Protein in the vegetarian diet
Free2be and other vegetarians: You might want to try eating Quinoa or Amaranth. You cook it just like rice and it is the only plant source of protein that contains all 9 amino acids. It truly is a super food. No more beans and rice combining, unless you want to.

Re: Which products to buy for ADDING protein?
Free2B honestly it sounds like you are getting a fine amount of protein. You eat eggs, tofu, beans. I would just make sure I eat liek 3 servings a day. I am not a vegetarian but I think i get less protein than you.
My favorite thing EVER for protien is IC Fantasia Super Concentrated Reconstructor. It is very detangling, etc. It is cheap too, about 5 dollars. get it at any beauty supply store. You shampoo, put this on for maybe 15 minutes or so, rinse out, then either do a DC or a regular conditioning.
I HIGHLY recommend this product...especially for natural hair. I give it 4.75 out of 5. It is awesome

Lynnie I don't think you need a DC after that but a regular conditioning is fine.
How often do you wash your hair? If once a week then do protein with regular conditioning 1st week, then 2nd week do a light protein with a DC, then 3rd week start again with that protein and regular conditioning etc. So it is protein with light moisture, then ligth protein and deep moisture
