All Natural Shea Butter

Post by Butterfly126 on 20th May 2010, 3:29 pm

Hey ladies!

Today I went to a local hair supply store. They don't sell anything "natural" or "organic" but when I got to the register I saw containers of shea butter!!!! On the label it said "All Natural Shea Butter $5.99/lb". It looked like scoops of ice cream (LOL) and it was a light yellow-ish color. I know that most of you curlies order your shea butter from websites like Butters and Bars and I wasn't sure if the shea butter being sold at a regular hair supply store was LEGIT! For some reason I just didn't believe that it was the real thing, so I didn't buy it.

How can you tell if you're getting good quality, all natural shea butter? [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Our beauty supply stores sell real shea butter. I also buy mine from the flea market and some people buy from street vendors.

I got that kind from the Beauty Supply Store and it broke me out. I read that the yellowish color comes from some kind of dye they add to it??? I ended up giving it away. Now I only order the pure unrefined shea from BnB. My roommate, who has eczema, uses the kind from the BSS and has had no issues so I guess its just what you like.

I use to get mine from the beauty supply store, but since ordering online, I will never purchase from the store again, even if I really needed it. The batches that I order online are like no other...when I put it on my finger tips and rub, it immediately begin to melt and smooth. This shea butter helped me to get rid of all of my products and stop my pjism in its track.

Now...I only use water, shea butter, black soap, and castile soap...no lie. I haven't used conditioner in 2 months and I only use the soaps 2 twice a month and I wash with plain water every week (the best yet). My hair is surly thriving and I think it's because I keep it simple.

Oh...every full moon I use EVOO, but that's about it.

I buy my shea butter by the pound from Coastal Scents. A friend and I buy two pounds at a time and its only 10 dollars. Its really good quality, really smooth and the scent is very light. My hair just eats it up!

what should you look for when buying shea butter, I was going to go to african store or on eof those street fetivals and get some, but I'm unsure about the yellow versus the white shea butter ,etc.

I read raw unrefined shea butter is best, is this coorect?

SimplyMoi, raw unrefined shea butter is the best [nutritious] kind and the one you should look for when purchasing. The only difference b/n yellow and white (off white; pure white typically means that it's refined) is the geographical location where it's made. The nuts come in different colors, depending on where they're from. I personally prefer the white b/c for some reason, it doesn't feel as heavy, and I don't like the yellow color for my mixtures.

I cannot remember where I read it but the yellow shea is actually a different tree. I'm not sure how valid this is but I have used the BSS and other brands. I prefer the other brands. They seems to emulsify better and are less heavy. Hope this makes sense.

I was looking for something to seal my ends wiht after twisting and I bought some Pure African Shea Butter from a place in my area. It's yellow, a little sticky, and thick. Is that different from the unrefined shea butter you all are talking about?

@VonAngel yes that's how it looks. Am I supposed to melt it a bit in the microwave or is that a personal preference?

I melt it slightly in the microwave when I want to use it to mix w/ other ingredients. Some folks put some in a metal bowl and let sit over hot water. But if I want to use it on my skin, then I just use it as is.

I have heard that Shea butter that is really is not really Shea butter but its actually something called African butter which also good for hair but different. So may sure its a more towards tan than bright yellow.

@ Simply Moi..thank you, thank you, thank you for posting that link on what true shea butter is and looks like...I have sadly been a victim of the so called 'yellow shea butter..100% unrefined, but I see that its not..I know now that it sould be beige or ivory colored and not yellow. I know now that I probably have shea butter that has bee dyed or either I have africa butter..thank you again for posting the PK

I went to a festival where I live and they actually had a shea nut (I believe that's what it's called.) They were scooping it right out of the nut. I bought a container and I was shocked to know that it was just $5. It is different from the shea butter I bought from the beauty supply store. I don't think it's as yellow and it more smooth the touch.
