Failed attempt at a BC
I have been transitioning for a little over 6 months now and recently made the decision to just go ahead and do the BC. Ive worn my hair the same way for 6 years (straight and relaxed) and I was ready for something drastic. I originally was going to search for natural hair salons but I got discouraged when looking at the prices ($95-$200 for a cut...wtf??) I couldn't justify spending that kind of money on my hair and didn't feel comfortable doing it myself. So yesterday, I decide to call my regular stylist and tell her what I wanted to do. She sounded a little apprehensive on the phone but willing.
WELL! When I walked in, she started giving me the 3rd degree and calling me crazy. She didn't understand what I wanted to do after I cut my hair. She asked "What do you want to do, walk around with an afro, you want to go back to school looking like that w/nappy hair?" She didn't get the concept.
Long story short, I ended up getting a bob and a press & curl. I'm now in desperate search of a natural hair salon. I really didn't expect all that. I was told I went to college and got crazy. I can't lie this was a very discouraging experience.
I'll be searching the forums for a natural hair salon in the Essex County NJ or NYC area.

I'm sorry about how your stylist reacted....if you are crazy, then their are a lot of beautiful crazy women walking around, I am proud to be one of them!!
Dont get discouraged. I'm sure someone will suggest a place you can go and get your hair cut and styled.

Why don't you try someplace like a Great Clips or a Barber? Hang in there. It will work out

Go to a barber! Tell them exactly what you want, and they'll do it. I went to a barber for my second chop, and I paid all of $10. They'll even shape your hair for you if you ask them. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] Hang in there!
Re: Failed attempt at a BC
I plan on doing mine myself, here's a good vid on how:
If it's not even enough after I do it, I'll go and get it shaped, but I think I'll be fine

I agree...go somewhere else. Remember you are the one that has to wear your hair in it's natural state, no one else. I would suggest that before you do cut the rest of it off make sure that YOU are ready later for everyone else. The fact that her ranting and raving pursuaded you to go a different way may be an indicator that you need a little more time to settle yourself with being completely natural.
Experiences like that is what I used to gauge myself before I cut my hair. Folks can be real triffling and say some crazy stuff and you gotta be ready for it all. Keep your head up boo! And be "missqueenlene"! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Sorry about your failed attempt. I had the same trouble with my mom, but as soon as that blow-out got frizzy....Mama finally came around, lol. Hopefully, you'll find another stylist that is willing to cut your hair.

Thanks so much for the support ladies.
@Heart2Worship you make a very valid point. Internally I just knew I was ready for this but when I started getting the 3rd degree, my reaction wasn't as confident as I would have expected. I figure I paid 50 dollars to get my hair so I'll take the next two weeks to reflect.
@Latoya28, honestly I'm afraid to take scissors to my head...my hand-eye coordination has always been a little off lol
Luckily a few friends recommended a natural hair salon...Im gonna give them a call. Ill also look into the barber idea
I also have a natural Godsister who has been doing her and her sister's hair for years....I may ask her if she's willing to do this for me.
Thanks!

Hey This experience is a learning experience everyone is going to have their opions on what you should and should not do to your hair when you decide to go natural. Be honest with yourself and think can i handle what people are going to say with my hair natural and short. You should be going natural for yourself and no one else if people don't like your decision at the end of the day it is your hair and you have to wear it. Be confident about it. I went through the same thing and I had to say this is for me and whoever don't like its not your hair. I did my own BC and then decided 2weeks later to get it shaped by a baber in a salon. The decision is yours Rock wit you have under that straightness

*raising my hand as a certified crazy person* and I love it! Everyone is giving you good advice..Good luck!
Re: Failed attempt at a BC
The best thing in the WORLD I could have done was changed from a predominantly "relaxed" hair salon with a hand full of natural clients to an all natural salon. The clients and staff is SSSOOOO encouraging of going natural, bcs, and other styles. The clients serve as hair inspiration and are eager to answer questions or tell you their bc stories. I love it there and so does my daughter!
I would look for a natural stylist I feel comfortable with not only to do my BC, but to take care of my regular salon visits. If you go to a barber be sure they don't use clippers. I have read those nightmare stories on several forums--barbers who cut off the hardwork of curly nap newgrowth.

Re: Failed attempt at a BC
I had a similar situation when I went to my stylist to BC. He said I was just having a waiting to exhale moment. and i assured him thats what I wanted to do and I wasnt going to change my mind about it. Then another hairdresser asked i wouldnt just get it pressed until the relaxer grew out but I didnt like that idea either. The point is once you are dead set you need to let them know that you want it and absolutely cant be moved.
Re: Failed attempt at a BC
Will you be going back to that hairdresser, missqueenlene?

Re: Failed attempt at a BC
i count myself lucky... i went wednesday to my stylist for deep conditioner and eyebrows.. yes, i know i could do this myself but i really like leaning back and letting someone else do it... anyway.... i took my 'after shampoo' products ... i told her how to do it... and she did it.... her partner is a naturalist and she mentioned some thngs to try and explained why you have to do certain things, etc... she also told me to go and get the uncle funky prods which she loves....
