10 Months Post Relaxer Empty 10 Months

Post by MusicMovesMe 10th May 2010, 5:12 pm

I guess I can get this started. My last relaxer was July '09. I won't lie and say I haven't looked back since, but I've stopped myself from doing anything crazy. In this pic you can a week old flexi rod set, pulled back with a elastic head band.

This has been my go-to only style since taking my braids out a few months ago. I've straightened it a couple times in the last month or so, that was just out of laziness. I plan to BC in July to make it a full year of transition.

10 Months Post Relaxer Empty 10 Months post relaxer

Post by jaymarjay 23rd May 2010, 9:56 pm

It's weird because I don't remember the last day that I got a relaxer, but I KNOW I didn't get a relaxer at all during the month of August because I was BROKE! I just kept my hair up as best I could and had a meeting at the end of September 2009 with my graduate school advisor. I was looking for a job since graduating in May 2009 and was meeting with her to give her updates on my search. When I told her about my hair dilemma, she told me to go natural. She was like, "If I was an African American female, I would wear my hair natural all the time; no chemicals at all!" It was weird because of all the Black women that I knew were transitioning or going natural, a Caucasian middle-age woman was the one who convinced me that I should do it.

Anyways since then, I have tried a variety of transitioning styles - braidouts, twistsouts, headband poofs; my favorite hands down has been bantu knots. They mirror my natural texture (although the curls are a bit looser) and allow me time to "bond" with my hair since they take so long for me to do. What I have enjoyed most about this transition is learning how to do my OWN hair without having to rely on a stylist. Yup, I don't have to let someone TELL me what works for my hair, I can experiment with it on my own. I will be big chopping on August 25th, which is my 25th birthday...just wanted to have a cool way of remembering it! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

10 Months Post Relaxer Empty Re: 10 Months Post Relaxer

Post by Gado-Gado Gal 3rd June 2010, 10:38 pm

Hey there, 10-Month Sistahs!

My last relaxer was in late July 2009, and I've decided to do a gradual transition, trimming off the texturized hair bit by bit, unless I get tired of that and suddenly BC! I've gone without texturizing for a year before (to reduce chemical exposure) so thus far I'm doing well psychologically Smile The main difference is that I'm taking better care of the new growth this time around...and I'm not going back to creamy crack! I've had a bit of breakage at the line between the new and old growth at the front of my head, but it's minimal and the new growth hasn't broken. In the photo you can see my new dark growth on the top of my head (about 5 inches) and the streaky texturized growth on the bottom 2/3s.

My main style for the past few years has been braid outs. That's worked well for the past 10 months too, but with winter here in Australia I've been spending more time indoors. Hence, I'm trying wash-n-gos (as in the photo). I co-wash and leave-in condition with Jason Apricot Shine and Giovannie 50:50 Balance Conditioners. For the wash-n-go I style with Kiss My Face Upper Management Gel, avocado oil, and Giovanni Sunset Styling Lotion. I touch up with the Sunset Styling Lotion (also great to smooth out frizzies), and use shea butter, sesame and avocado oils on 2 and 3-day hair.

Since the climate is much drier in Australia than where I live (San Francisco Bay Area), I'm finally starting up weekly deep conditioning treatments. I'm inspired to try the homemade recipes in the comments of the recent post by Nikki. I hope this will help stretch my hair to 4 and 5-day hair again.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] I'm 10 months and two weeks post.

I was full MBL but cutting my hair has become inevitable. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] I sure hate to lose my length but I know my natural hair will avail. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] My ends are becoming see through. I would say that I'm probably a full APL when I do get rid of all my thin ends. Look at all you wonderful 10 monthers! I'm shocked to have made it thus far, but I'm ready for it to be over. I'll be on my way there!

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]My favorite style, Braid outs!

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]The coil in my avatar stretched. It has some moisturizer on it, otherwise it would look super frizzy.

Hi everyone. I am officially at my 10 month mark. I have not taken many pictures of my hair in its natural state since May but plan on taking some pictures this month. I hope to transition for about 2 years, but I may do a minichop sometime in the spring.

I am 10 months tomorrow.

I want to transition for 24 to 36 months.

I honestly do not think it's a big deal to transition because I have my hair in braids and weaves. Once I take off this weave I will try to take better care of my hair

I plan on taking down this weave end of October or early November then put it in braids for november and december

Saturday marked 10 months perm free! I am so happy that I'm closer to my goal. I blow dried my hair today and noticed significant growth. Now it's time to French braid it for my half wigs.

Thanks Chunkyy

I just Co-wash and finding the right conditioner has really helped me out a lot if I get a good one from the start that smooths away my tangles I am good to go from there..

Now I use Aussie Moist to co-wash
Just got some of Hair Veda Amala Cream Rinse I will use this b4 I co-wash to clean my hair because I use a lot of gels sometimes.

Then I do a Black tea rinse occassionally or use Joico or Aphogee 2 minute

I DC with Dominican DC Capilio just ran out I use that to steam my hair with and after I rinse this out my hair just seems to melt to where I hardly have to use anything else to detangle my hair.. I am planning to order Nacidit Conditioner (Dominican) it's PH balanced and I would love to start testing the Ph balance in my products.. This will be my next DC that I Steam with..

wow i`m late , you responded so quickly. Thank you. It seems as if i`m right on track with the co washing. Aussie is great.

sorry if i`m asking to many questions but , have you experienced "scab" hair? or just really dry, coarse hair in only a few spots of your head? I`m experiencing something like that and i wanted to know if you had an idea on how to deal with it

I do experience some dryness in about 1 area and that is the back of my head at the neck or where my beedie b's hang out Embarassed But you know what I never associated it with scab hair I just thought that was an area that I was not paying attention when it comes to moisturizing and stuff and it was just dryer. I noticed when I payed more attention to that area it did good for about 2 weeks.. I slap more conditioner back there and I make sure I co-wash that good.. and pay special attention to it.. I don't understand the scab hair thing I need to research more on that I think there was just an article on it.

No you are not asking a lot of question that is the only way we will know what to do is to ask? cheers

I think our 12 months maybe close together.. I would love to do a mini chop during that time.. I've been chopping little away at a time. I know certain parts in the back of my head are almost there and that mini chop might do it..

It's hard to believe that it's been 10 months already! 2 more months until I bc! I'm actually sad that my transitioning journey is coming to an end, but am excited about the new journey I will start with all natural hair. I can't say that I am having any problems transitioning lately, things are actually going fairly well. Happy Transitioning!

Congrats on making it to the 10 month mark- I'm at 10 months myself and I finally feel within the last couple of months I found a routine, my go to products, and my hair is has been flourishing well. I originally said I was BC at 1 year but now I think I'm going to go until 18 months. Now that my detangle routine is so much better it's not a burden/chore on wash days and I'm loving the transitioning journey!
