I need some Curlfriends to show me the ropes.
I am new to this site and this hair. Thanks to this site I am loving every minute of it. I am having a hard time with products. My hair is not dry and the roots but dry the rest of the way. If I use too much oil or some frequently suggested products my hair will get weighed down and look wet. I love my wash and go poofy fro. I have fell in love with Giovanni 50/50 shampoo and conditioner. But currently I am using John Frieda hair serum and curl defining gel. I want to give my hair the best chance and growing long and plentiful. I would like to know why I shouldn't use cones and there types of products. Also, I find that I need to wash my hair 3 to four times per week. Will all of the above stunt my hair growth?? If so, what do some of you curlfriends recommend I try?

Silicones prevent moisture from leaving the hair. It also prevents moisture from getting into the hair. Many hair care specialists do not recommend using them frequently because of these properties. If you use silicones and want to start using silicone-free products, you should clarify before doing so. This way your hair and scalp are clean and clear of the silicone.
I use silicone when my hair is rollerset. This helps it from taking in moisture and seals in the moisture I applied before applying the silicone (hope that makes sense).
If you cleanse your hair frequently, I suggest using silicone-free products. Many brands have low-poo or no-poo options. Castille soap (diluted with at least 30% water) is another good option. I use Dr. Bonner's all in one soap, made from oils. You could also cleanse your scalp and hair with conditioner. Many like Suave Naturals and VO5's Moisture Milks.
As for hair growth, it is hereditary and of course, based on how well you care for your scalp and overall health. For growth retention, I think it is best to keep hair away from the elements (sun, wind, heat, cold, etc.). Protecting your hair often helps retain length.
A simple routine includes cleansing, moisturizing and sealing. For moisture, ensure the product is water and/or aloe vera based. For sealing, oils and butters typically are use.
