Menopause Hair tips?
So, I came home for Christmas with my first successful Bantu Knot Out,
and got lots of compliments. My favorite aunt expressed her desire to
go natural, and I shared this site with her. She really wants to stop
getting relaxers for a number of reasons, but she expressed concern.
She's going through menopause, and even with a relaxer she frequently
sweats out her 'do in the middle of the night because of hot flashes. I
know we have women of all ages on this site, so I am wondering if there
are any tips or tricks. I am not a big sweater in general, so I didn't
really have any ideas about maintaining my styles when I get a little
misty.
Any Ideas?
Thanks!
Tia

If she does a wash and go, sweating really isn't an issue.

She can rinse her hair in the morning. If she is in Chicago, she can bun it or pin it up to prevent the cold from getting to her ends and wear a hat.
If she doesn't want her hair to get completely wet, she could spray her scalp with a mixture of water and EO of peppermint, tea tree, lavender or eucalyptus.

Thanks Blondie and ChrsLvsBks. I sent her this thread, and hopefully she'll feel confident enough to stop getting relaxers. I will keep you posted!

Re: Menopause Hair tips?
@ tiastresses, I'm 50 and going on 35yrs young. When I first went natural, alittle over under 2 yrs ago that was an issuse for me, that is probably why I went natural, I just got tried of sweating out a fleshly applied relaxer. Ugggrr. which I solved by tying a nylon/silk scarf around my head at night, since I seem to loose those bonnet type caps an night. Now that my hair is long enough to put in a high ponytail and do wrap the loose ponytail hair also, to retain the length if you want. This seem to help me for sweating out my style. I use the tightly curly method by Teri LaFlesh and this method of a style last me 2 wks seriouly. And of course, I mist my hair daily by wetting my hands w/ my favorite condish and appling the wet moisture to my hair which also cool my hot flashes. @leightred, thanks! I'm sure she will be happy to hear from someone who is going through it too! And you don't look 50 at all!

Leightred...beautiful!
I went natural because I was working out and my body changed. I couldn't keep a press because I was sweating in my hair; soaking wet hair when I finished working out. Natural styles are a sweaty heads best friend.

Actually, it's just a version of "shingling" which is what Miss Jessie's calls it. Many naturals have been doing it, I think Teri just gave it another name and "spread the word" to newbies who might not be familiar with it. I'd actually been doing it for years, and was surprised to see that it had a name! And to think folk pay big bucks to have it done at Miss Jessie's!!
