I need a change!!! I want so badly to color my hair want to do in the least harmful way possible. I want a brownish red tone, and I want to see a difference. Any suggestions!!!

Henna's color is so subtle that you really can't see it. I have done it only once, and did research to no end. The only thing Henna will do it give you some red undertones and not much more. I am looking for something more noticeable.

My natural hair color is black and henna alone does nothing for the color. I used two packages of Garnier Nutrisse Nourishing Color Creme to color my hair. The color I used was "True Red". It came out a brownish color, but with a henna application once a month, the color really pops now. Garnier is the least damaging color I've ever used (and I used a lot in my teen years).

BajanPrincess did you color it yourself? I'm interested in adding color as well but I'm scared that I might jack it up. :-)

Yes, I did it myself. The one time I went to the salon to get my hair colored I had a bad experience, so I never went again. Just make sure you read the instructions and take your time setting everything up. Also, I'm good with doing the back of my head, but some people aren't. If you fear you'll mess up the back, have a friend help you out.

One more question, do I deep condition before I color or after?

I deep conditioned after I colored....and I contiue to regularly deep condition and do hot oil treatments (on alternating weeks) so my hair doesn't dry out.

I have my hair bleached on the regular...and I deep condition the week before and the seek after. Overnight for 1 or 2 days before and after. I've never had an issue and my hair is very strong and healthy.

Well I use bleach and color and I consider my hair pretty healthy. If your concerned about bleach or damaging your hair try Aveeda. I've used Aveeda as well as other brands and haven't experienced any major issues. I think the key thing is to make sure your hair is in really great shape before adding color. Also please get a professional who knows what they are doing. Get a consultation and look at their books. Other tips...
-moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. I do moisture and seal at least once a day. You may need to up to twice a day once you color.
-I do weekly conditioning treatments. Sat. is for moisturizing deep conditioner and Weds is for the protein deep conditioner. You definitely want to make sure you have an even balance of moisture/protein in your hair.
-Oils are your friend. At least they were for be once i began color
-DO NOT overlap color. Let your hair grow at least an inch-2 inches before getting color redone. So you have a healthy scalp and hair. It's just like a relaxer, in that you don't want to get it done before you need it or too much too soon. You got me?
That's all I can think of for now. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.
Oh and fyi, my original hair color was really really dark brown, almost black. So it is possible to go from black to blonde. Most people think you can't. But it was a gradual process for me. I started with light brown highlights, to blonde highlights, to the color and highlights.
So I encourage you to try it. Be bold and unafraid!

See that's the thing...I don't know what color will give me the results I am seeking. I fear coming out with kool aid red hair. But fear light brown won't look like anything. Has anyone tried light mountain hair color?

Re: I want some color!!!
i've always had to get my hair lightened first then add a rinse for my color to shine. i've been beach blonde, fire engine red, jet black...i've done it all (except the ghetto rainbow colors like pink, blue, purple etc)
can you henna and use regular color? i know i get bored and im gonna want to color later myself. i like the reddish tone henna gives but i may want a strawberry blonde or golden bronze color too.
