Am I the only person
I have been natural for almost 3 years and am constantly vowing to do my own hair, but to no avail I wind up at the salon for everything....blowdry, flat iron, flat twist, braids, straw sets, etc. I have never had one clue about hair even with permed hair, but it's really starting to bother me because I want to learn. I have thought about taking some classes at a natural hair salon or something because this it ridiculous. I just found this site last week and have gone through many of the pictures on this site wishing that I could do some of the gorgeous styles, but I do not know where to begin. I didn't stop perming my hair because I'm anti-perm. I just really learned that my hair can do everything that permed hair can do with the right products (thanks to my wonderful stylist who is not a "natural" hair stylist, but only 20% of her clients relax their hair). I found her a time that I was becoming more mindful about what I was putting in my body and using on my skin and hair. I had stopped relaxing about 6 months before I met her and she just made the transition very easy. My hair is shoulder length and because it is all natural now, I'm not afraid of breakage as much as I was and ready to try to do some styles myself. Can anyone give me a suggestion on where to begin?

Practice, Practice, Practice
When I look at my two strand twists from 2-3 yrs ago I can't believe that I wore them in public. They look a whole letter better now.
Also check out YouTube, there are so many tutorials that are helpful.
I taught myself how to flat twist by watching vids on YouTube.
Start with something simple-like twists and as your skills improve so will your style options.

I have always done my hair myself other than special occasions but I have friends who are just like you! One specific friend still goes to the salon (specializing in natural hair) but not as often. Although she gets frustrated when trying to do her own hair she does practice and try different things herself and I think she's starting to have fun with it!
Really it just takes a bit of patience and practice. You will get it

Re: Am I the only person
I didn't know how to do my daughters hair until this year! I just learned how to do all of this stuff and I'm still learning something new every day. I love websites like this and other various forums. Youtube has a bunch of great tutorials as well. You can check out my blog too. I have done rollersets (let air dry) flexi rod sets (air dry) cornrows, box braids, 3 strand twists, twist outs, etc on my daughters hair. Did I tell you I just learned how to do this stuff this year? lol If I can do it I know you can do it!!!
This is the website that taught me how to cornrow (after watching numerous videos that did not help, lol)

Search on youtube strawsets, flexirod sets, natural hair tutorials, etc.
You will learn!

Re: Am I the only person
Thank you so much! I will try a style or two every month every other weekend. That way if it looks too crazy, I have time to make an appointment at a salon before the weekend is over. I just don't want to go to work with my hair looking like it has legs. LOL
