Have you tried a cream moisturizer like Shea Moistures curl enhancing smoothie or Oyin handmade's hair dew? I use both but now am primarily using the hair dew and my hair stays soft and moisturized.

idk if that would make a difference but i stopped using coconut oil in the winter because it makes my hair hard instead i add aloe vera juice , or gel to my shea butter mix with a bit of honey , and avocado oil it seems to keep my hair sealed really well

I spritz morning and night (my twists) with water mixed with Garnier Fructise Leave-in.
Re: cheap hair products and dryness
yea i stopped using cocnut oil straight on my hair too. i realized that it mite not be the best idea when it keep solidifying on my hair when i walked outside. lol but i have been thinking about trying aloe vera juice. i use aloe vera gel, but i dont find it partically moisturizing. so i was thinking tht aloe juice wudnt be much better, but i cud be wrong.... aloe gel does give a good hold thoug

Maybe you can add some oils to your cheap conditioner to help combat the dryness or wet it at night to help with that I wet my hair twice weekly but will be increasing it to 3-4x weekly I think that will help
Re: cheap hair products and dryness
i think a cream moisturizer may help... ive been thinking about tht for a awile. ive heard that shea moisture curl enhancing smothie has humectants in it. does anyone know a moisturizer without humectants?

I like Cantu to be quite honest. It's cheap and creamy!!! LOL So maybe you will have luck with that one!!!
Re: cheap hair products and dryness
grab some EVOO - olive oil is a great thing to have - you can mix it into the HEHH and use a little straight to seal your ends. I switched to EVOO and avocado oil for this season. Limited coconut and castor oil. I have been using more Aussie Moist this winter - the HE was too light. Aussie has cones though. So you might want to go coupon hunting if you want to try a brand w/o them. I find they can be more expensive...
Anyone know a good cheap brand with no cones?

Hello komirra,
My suggestion is that before you buy another product, examine each step of your wash day and styling session regimens.
You may need to make a seasonal adjustment to compensate for
environmental changes (cold air outside, exposure to more indoor heat, etc) that can contribute to dryness.
I can't remember if it was a CN blog entry or a forum entry but I recall commentary about how to keep humectants/glycerin in your regimen without losing the moisture in your hair (I'll try to find it).

coconut oil makes my hair hard in the winter as well, (but only if I use it as a leave in). When I use it in my deep conditioner mix, it works fine. I learned it by trial and error...wish I knew about this site back then.

Re: cheap hair products and dryness
I have used the Root Awakening. I used the Strengthening formula and it did not make my hair dry. There is also a moisutrizing formula. Here's the link:

Re: cheap hair products and dryness
i have found the best results with
-any creamy conditioner
-honey
-and oils (i like olive oil and avocado oil)
And when you're deep conditioning, SATURATE the hair.
I got the method from this video.

Re: cheap hair products and dryness
thank you all for the advice. i tried doing a henna treatment, needed it for the strength. then i deep conditioned with ORS, honey, olive oil, moisture milks, and yes to carrots. it seemed to work well! i did my first rollerset for New Years, trying to look fly for the new year! i used Shea Moisture as a leave in and my hair feels soft now

Re: cheap hair products and dryness
Honey and EVOO added to one of your conditioner and leave it for at least 30 mins. I do this weekly as well as spraying my hair morning and night with water.
I think you have a ton of great ideas here, you should be ok. Good luck

Re: cheap hair products and dryness
Here's the Curly Nikki Q&A regarding glycerin in the winter.
CN: Oyin's Juices and Berries has a pretty delicious ingredient list:
Purified water infused with horsetail, lavender, nettle, roses, and chamomile; organic flaxseeds; aloe vera juice; vegetable glycerine; essences of lavender, sweet orange, ylang ylang, and rosemary; grapefruit seed extract; citric acid; and love
This spritz seems to truly be moisturizing my hair, despite the glycerin. I was under the impression that glycerin in the winter time is a bad thing, as it may leech the moisture from my strands. Are there some instances where you can get away with it? Is it far enough down on the list? Does my moisturizing conditioners and butters counteract it?
JC: Glycerin (glycerine/glycerol - all the same thing) is hygroscopic. This means it draws moisture (water) from its surrounding. It is very good at doing these because it has 3 water attracting groups (known as hydroxyl groups) per molecule (As far as molecules go, this is quite high!). This is the reason why some people say that glycerin is drying which is sort of true but not really. If you expose glycerin to air, it will saturate itself to the point where it does not need any more water. And when you put it in water (which it loves), then it will REALLY saturate itself and will not draw water away from your hair. Therefore, the message is glycerin plus water, is good! While the herbs and essences probably just make the product smell good, the glycerin is the stuff that makes it moisturising.
