"GOOD HAIR"
Hey all....can't find where this thread is but Good Hair is on one of the HBO channels RIGHT now and I am finally watching it for the 1st time!!!
Re: "GOOD HAIR"
Let us know what you think when it's over. That movie made me laugh and shake my head all at the same time.
Re: "GOOD HAIR"
I'm watching it now... so far I think it's sort of misleading.. isn't this supposed to be about how we perceive hair, and not random snippets into some hair cutting competition? It's like they ran out of stuff to talk about so they went on to 'hair wars' or something.

Re: "GOOD HAIR"
Ok. So it just went off. And yes. I was laughing and shaking my head at certain things too ChardaeD!!! I think it was actually ok because he brings up a lot of things. I don't really thing he HAD a point to make in this film, I think he was just showing the fact that black women are very concerned about their hair and the lengths they will go to to get the looks they want, no matter what chemicals are in it. The fact that the stuff can literally chew thru a soda can doesn't bother these women, as long as their hair is fly!!! The fact that Indian women sacrifice their own beautiful, long healthy hair, not knowing where it goes, and Black women just buy to sew in their own heads, paying WAY more for it than the Indians would get for it!!!
So now that I think about it, I think Chris was just really trying to say that it's all ridiculous!!!! And yes, it was a shame that the natural girl didn't speal up but that's not Chris' fault. She was out numbered by her relaxed/weaved peers.
I think it was insane though how much money Salt n Pepa and all them other women said they pay for their weaves!!!! WHAT????? I would NEVER!!!! And some of the lower income women will skip paying rent to pay for these $1000 weaves???? WTH????? Craziness. People really don't have their priorities in order at all!!!!!
All in all, I did enjoy the film. My hubby even sat right here and watched it with me and he thought it was interesting too.

i deff agree with u the movie had way too much going on at one time. like are you going to talk about perming, weaving, or just go all out and have a hair show?? idk i didnt really care for the movie very much in so many way to me it made women of color look bad when it comes to our weaves. like he showed women getting their weaves done, paying mad money yet looking a hot mess in the end in my opinion.
Re: "GOOD HAIR"
OMG....that one woman in the salon that said she had that $1000 weave in her head!!!! I'm sorry there was no way in hell that ratty lookin mess was $1000!!!! Nooooo way!!!!! LOL She must have had it for a year!!!!! If I pay $1000 for some hair it better wash, comb, and style itself!!! AND stay fly until I take it out!!!!!! LOL
Re: "GOOD HAIR"
mmmhhmm thats the weave i was talking about... like really who really wants to walk around with two months worth of a car note on their head and STILL look a hot mess

Re: "GOOD HAIR"
I thought the movie did a good job of exposing the sad truth about black women and hair issues. I was disappointed that naturals were under-represented tho. I think there were only 2 ladies with natural hair in the whole movie.
It would be interesting to see a doc about the Natural Hair Evangelists. That could be funny.

I think I'm one of the few black women that doesn't hate this movie. I agree with whomeever it was that said he doesn't have to make a point. I guess your judgement on the movie depends on what your expectations were going into it. I kinda just thought it was a docu-comedy. I think the only consistent theme throughout the entire movie is the insane lengths that black women with go through to have fly, straight hair. I learned a couple of things so I was fine with it.
I definitely had some "I hope white people don't see this" moments while watching ... lol.

Re: "GOOD HAIR"
Does anyone feel like he was making fun of these women who were paying $1000 for their weaves without him actually doing stand-up. I'm not trying to offend anyone but it was obvious to me. Those were some EFFED up weaves.

I agree with you. I mean this is Chris Rock so I knew he definitely wasn't going to present a serious, in-depth movie about our hair history. I think he did a good job of highlighting the issues that we have with our hair and the incredible lengths we'll go to in order to achieve a certain look. I think that at the end he summed it up very well, it's not about what's on your head, it's about what's in it!
Re: "GOOD HAIR"
I can't wait to see it. I set it to record and will watch over Christmas Holiday with my Natural daughter.

Re: "GOOD HAIR"
But I do agree with TLog77....someone should make a doc about natural haired chicks and compare it with relaxed hair. Somethin!!!! that would be cool.
Re: "GOOD HAIR"
I wouldn't said I hated the film and it was definitely an eye opener on what Black women would do to have "good hair". I was actually was more intested in the bonner brother competition. I think the real eye opner was when he ask the little girl who started getting relaxers at 3 if he should let her daughter get one and she said yes, and he ask why and she responed because she suppose to. Little girls are now made to believe that we need a relaxer. No bueno

Re: "GOOD HAIR"
OMG!!!! Right!!! i was blown away by that response!!! And shame om the mama or grandma whoevere that waswith her!!! puttin those chemicals in that poor child's hair!!! My oldest girls are 8 and they have only had their hair straightened like twice and that was with a blow dryer the 1st time and flat iron/hot comb the 2nd time. Now that i know more about how harsh that stuff REALLY is it will NEVER be me puttin that crap in their hair and I will advise them NOT to ever get it done!!!
Re: "GOOD HAIR"
I saw the documentary last year. I thought it was interesting. I didn’t realize where all of the Indian hair comes from! I thought that women were selling their hair to support their families! Also, my friend is in that movie. She was riding up the escalator at the hair show. LOL
I thought that it was all over the place too. He starts off with his daughter (who is soooo cute) asking why she doesn’t have “good hair”. He never answers the question of what “good hair” is and where the idea comes from. He also didn’t talk about his wife and how she wears her hair. To quote Chris Rock, “Yeah. I said it!”
The hair show part is a waste. The best part is looking at Derek J in his high heels and skinny jeans! LOL!
But am I the only person that didn’t have high expectations for this? I agree with LaToya, I didn’t think that that Chris Rock would do a serious look at this topic. It would be an ambitious project for him to undertake.
