Wow! This is a great story, and a very bold step for the black news reporter to take! She looked fab after her big chop! I love it! I hope she knows about curlynikki.com! That would be a great interview!!!!

I saw this when you posted on FB!!! Thanks for sharing NikG! I shared this with a friend of mine who is a news producer (she does a few stories in front of the camera too). She wants to go natural but feels she cant because of her job.

Re: Great news story out of Palm Beach
so... i think there should be a section that highlights "professional hair" Im job hunting now and am so fearful that i will have to straighten my hair for an interview. I dont know many naturals (besides CN bloggers) and find it difficult to locate styles and techniques.
BTW the same thing happened to my niece 3 YEARS OLD and a little girl at her daycare told her her hair was nappy and ugly and my pumpkin was really sad... like really sad and wanted to wear hats to school at 3!!! I think as a society we need to do better at teaching our children that beauty comes in all shapes sizes and TEXTURES. The media tends to focus on weight and clothes but hair is a huge part of our identity. It is often a sense of pride when a little girl has fresh cornrows and a head full of beads, we take ownership and responsibility when our mothers hand over the hair tools for us to "take care" of our own hair, is often a creative outlet for teens in their middle and high school years, is sometimes the center of our worries for dates, parties, social gatherings, etc... Hair is important and needs to be treated as such. hopefully many will accept our "s but there is much work, discussion and un stereotying that needs to be done. *steps off soapbox*

@ blkbeauty2010 - check out SheSingsLovely on YouTube. She did a contest a few months back on interview/professional hair styles.

excellent story .... I hope this story spreads like wildfire. Due to more and more cultural diversity in the workplace, I truly hope that stereotyping one due to the choice of a hairstyle becomes non-existent.

Re: Great news story out of Palm Beach
I used to be a reporter/producer and I was always apprehensive of going natural because the business is so subjective. I even got LASIK because I was told I'd be more likely to get reporting jobs without my glasses (mind you I've got style-- extra fly glasses, but whatever). The hair and the glasses would've been too "distracting" for viewers.
Seeing Rochelle on-air with her natural hair texture is really inspiring. Granted I'm working in a different part of the media industry, I hope other young women see this, and consider going natural if they're tired of thin hair, or hair that's not growing.
The story also serves as a wake up call for decision makers at TV stations...that cookie cutter look is so yesterday.
And it's not a trend! I feel like it's a lifestyle. Trends disappear. My hair is staying like this FOREVER.

I think it's wonderful that the mother in the story bc her hair to show her daughter that her hair is beautiful. The new's reporter looks beautiful with her short do. Great story and inpriation for those who would like to go natural.
