Go to see a dermatologist. Best move I ever made & whatever you do, don't pick.

Is seeing a dermatologist necessary for whiteheads as well? I get whiteheads not blackheads.

Yep. I would go anyway esp if you have health insurance coz it won't cost you much but your skin will look so great that you'll wonder why you put it off so long. I'm a compulsive zit buster and I had blackheads, whiteheads, folliculitis & hyperpigmentation from my constant picking [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] . I'm recovering from all that now but the over the counter stuff did not do a thing for my breakouts...nothing. I only wish I was brave enough to post my progress.
