Homemade moisturizer
I love Karen's Body Beautiful Hair Milk, but I go through it fast and want a comparable product, homemade if possible. I used to buy KinkyCurly Custard until I discovered that I get the same results using Ecostyler gel mixed with Coconut and Shea butter (probably works better). I'm hoping that someone has a recipe for a simple moisturizer, that won't leave my hair too greasy. I already have some shea, coconut, and mango butters at home. I've heard that some people mix these with aloe?

Re: Homemade moisturizer
You can try distilled water, aloe vera juice or gel and oils. You could also omit the water.
Re: Homemade moisturizer
Thanks ChrsLvsBks! I have always used tap water for spritzes. Do you notice a difference with distilled water?

Re: Homemade moisturizer
I've never used distilled but have used bottled. I don't recall a difference. I think it is a matter of the amount or type of bacteria present.

Hi LovelyK
I recently made a leave in that has done wonders for my dry hair, maybe it'll work for you??
2 parts Aloe Vera Gel mixed with 1 part Herbal Essences Hello Hydration. The HEHH feels kinda greasy so the AVG cuts that out some. Use lightly and seal afterwards.
2nd mix
I also needed some glycerin, but couldn't find any. I mixed some KY Jelly (Walmart brand) and bottled water with some essential oils and have been spritzing my hair with that every night. My nape and crown used to feel so !!crispity!! dry, this has definitely improved my hair. I have a 2oz spray bottle and I did about 1.5 oz of water to .5 oz of glycerin plus a few drops of essential oils.
HTH!!!

Re: Homemade moisturizer
Hello Ladies,
Has anyone tried shea+aloe as a homemade moisturizer (shealoe)?
Does shealoe provide hold for twists/sets, or does it get poufy? (my hair is 4b/c)
Do you have a recipe that works for you?
Thanks in advance!
@Naturally Zee - does your AVG+HEHH mixture perform double duty for creating defined twist outs? I'm looking for an HG recipe for 3rd day hair.
Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure. I haven't used it for styling, only moisturizing. It should though because it's just like a pudding mix. I think you might want to try some EcoStyler mixed with condish (probably a 2 gel to 1 condish ratio) I thought AVG gel held great for my hair until I tried the Ecostyler, much more hold.
Oh, and the shea-aloe in my opinion is not for moisturizing I'd still use it for sealing and as a style setter. It works really well on my skin too. One thing you gotta think about is oil (shea) does not moisturize, water does, so nothing with an oil base is going to moisturize. It will hold moisture in, or lock it out, if used before a water based product or water.

Re: Homemade moisturizer
I forgot to add water to my AVG+HEHH recipe, just made some and I'm like WTF oh yeah WATER, LOL.
The first time I made it I had some AVG that my meddling child put some water in, at first I was mad, but I just decided to use it in my mixes. Work well. Use enough water to get the consistency you like.

Re: Homemade moisturizer
FYI, distilled water is water that has had the minerals and other impurities removed. Some people experience mineral build-up on their hair if their tap water is high in mineral content, so they opt to use distilled or demineralized water for their hair 'potions'. It is also used in irons to prevent the white mineral build-up you sometimes see in the iron holes.

Re: Homemade moisturizer
Mine is kinda simple
but makes my curls sing!
I spritz hair with SAA (silk amino acid)
then
I mix VO5 condish + veggie oil
and apply liberally.

Where do you get the silk amino acid?

Re: Homemade moisturizer
I've seen it in The Vitamin Shoppe. I see it labeled as liquid amino acids. It is by Braggs.lovelyk wrote:Where do you get the silk amino acid?

I order mine from lotioncrafter.com
They have various sizes to chose from.
I have been ordering from them for about 5 years.
This is a main staple for my hair
whether relaxed or natural.
The liquid is a little yellow-ish in color
and it has a light fishy smell
but it dissipates after drying in the hair
or mixing with another product.
But it makes my hair soft and gets rid of frizzies.

I used the Shealoe mix with a hint of coconut oil for shine yesterday after my henna treatment. It did leave my hair soft and it hold pretty well. But I am not sure how well it holds because my hair does not hold well for about a week after I henna because my curls have loosened dramatically. I will have to wait for about 2 weeks and see how I like the shealoe mix.
Thanks in advance!

Is silk amino acid and braggs amino acid the same ?

Re: Homemade moisturizer
I have never used the Braggs aminos
so I can't answer objectively.
But I have seen a YT demo of shingling with yogurt and Braggs-
couldn't tell if the yogurt or the Braggs got rid of the frizzies
but it worked.
I have been tempted to purchase some Braggs
but I love the SAA so much!

I wouldn't recommend the Braggs/yogurt mixture. I had a bad experience with the "Cherry Lola" treatment.
I use Braggs on my food only...

Cherry Lola- That's it!!!
Yeah, the Braggs sounded more like something to eat
rather than something for the hair.
Thanx for confirming this.
& I will stick with my regular SAA!!
