Build-Up...What's good for it?
I've noticed that when I wash my hair, I usually have a lot of build up. I get nervous, and the co-wash method is X-ed out because I feel as if I have to use shampoo to get rid of the build-up. The products I use include Karen's Body Beautiful shampoo and Luscious Locks conditioner. With the build-up, her shampoo doesn't seem to work for me...so I grab the Organix coconut milk shampoo. For my twists, I use KBB's hair milk, but I have run out of it, so recently, I've been using Palmer's Coconut hair milk plus coconut oil and a little of KBB's hair butter for hold.
What type of shampoo/conditioner should I try? I have returned to using the apple cider vinegar rinse that my mom and grandmother used to do with my hair. I may not be doing that correctly though.

For build-up, I use Suave Clarifying Shampoo or do a ACV rinse, whichever is in the house.
I hear and read that some people like the baking soda treatment. I tried it but I think because I don't use a lot of product on my hair that it was a little too much for me.

I also do a ACV rinse and I use Suave Clarifying Conditioner not shampoo. I've heard about the baking soda thing but haven't given it a go yet. Maybe someone who has will come in a give their opinion.

I had the same problem and FANTASIA Tea Tree Shampoo did the trick! Which reminds me, I also wanna try Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle Conditioner. Tingle just seems to have a positive connotation when it comes to hair.
I'd use a different shampoo for balance.

ACV rinse. I got some ACV from Trade Joes and everytime I want to clarify or deeply cleanse and wash my hair I spray some ACV on my hair when I first get in the shower. I also have try this ACV shampoo bar I got from a seller on etsy.com. I like it because it doesn't smell as strong but I still like to use my Trader Joes ACV for deep cleansing.

How do you guys use ACV for cleaning your scalp? I did it once and it burned!

Is it possible you used too much ACV. What ratio of water:ACV did you use?
I never experienced burning, test a little on your skin before using it on your hair again. You could be allergic?
Re: Build-Up...What's good for it?
I used 1 part ACV to 2 parts H2O. Maybe I should dilute it more? What ratio do you use tiashauntee?

That does sound like a lot of ACV, I like the motowngirl version (minus the sage oil):
Apple Cider Vinegar Mix
• 1-2 tbs. apple cider vinegar
• 2 cups room temperature distilled water
• A couple drops sage oil (optional)
Mix items together and use as a final rinse after shampooing andconditioning or conditioner washing.

Thanks LOL. I guess I definitely overdid it!

Hi TerraD,
I have used that acv:water ratio without and issue ( ive also used 1:1). Had you been scratching your scalp? That could have aided in the irritation.

I am a scalp scratcher LOL! Because it definitely burned, I actually had small scabs on my scalp [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] and I know that's not normal. Could I be allergic?

Re: Build-Up...What's good for it?
I've also followed the Motowngirl.com recipe for an ACV rinse (minus the sage) and it worked well for me.
I first co-washed w/ Organix Shea Butter conditioner and then I did the ACV rinse. I spray it all over my hair and scalp while in the shower and then rinse after two minutes or so.
My hair feels squeaky clean, my little curls are defined, but it's not dried out or anything - all goals of a good clarifyer to me.

Re: Build-Up...What's good for it?
I recommend a good oil rinse or hot oil. Massage the oil into your scalp. It'll dislodge any buildup, and add a protective layer for any other products you use. You might want to think about the products you are leaving in your hair, I noticed certain ones lead to build up, I removed them, and no more clogged scalp.

Try peppermint oil mixed in with some condish. Let it sit for a few minutes n feel the tingle then rinse it worked forme hope it helps.

Re: Build-Up...What's good for it?
@ MsCrystal: I, too, get some buildup on my scalp and I can't just co-wash my hair. I have to have shampoo. I use Giovanni Tea Tree Shampoo. I really like it, because it gets rid of the buildup in one wash and your scalp feels cool, tingly, and very clean. You can give that a try.
Re: Build-Up...What's good for it?
I have been using leave in, sealer oil, and gel on my TWA and daily wash-n-go. Can I use some of the items you all have mentioned (ACV, baking soda, etc.) to remove these products from my hair? I ask because I am trying to follow the CG method and co-wash, no shampoo, but I am worried that will not be enough to really cleanse my hair.

Baking soda should work great for removing all the build up for you.
