Serenity23's - Fall Hair & Out & About Empty Serenity23 Perm Rods Results

Post by Serenity23 12th November 2009, 11:37 pm

I'm so sad to see the other content disappeared:( At any rate, I had attempted my first braid out. I braided my hair Tuesday and took the braids out this morning. I am attaching two photos. One that shows a close up of how it looks. It took me about an hour and 10 mins to braid my hair, but damn near close to 2 hrs to take them out. I think I made the braids too skinny and my arms were getting tired and I was pulling my hair. I think I will stick with doing two strand twists. When my hair is longer, I may revisit the braid out, but wiht thicker braids. I do plan to go out and do some things this weekend so I will probably wash and condition my hair tonight and twist it in the morning once it's dry. That way when I get ready to hit the streets tomorrow night it will be ready to untwist. Hope you ladies have a wonderful weekend!

Serenity23's - Fall Hair & Out & About Empty Sunday, Nov 15th

Post by Serenity23 15th November 2009, 6:10 pm

I haven't been keeping up with my hair journal for the past couple days. But I wanted to share my weekend hair styles. Friday night I decided to go out at the last minute. I'm not a wash n go person, so i had to think of something quick. I ended up cowashing my hair and putting it in some really fat twists. I was really expecting it to look horrible, but it worked out. Part of my hair was dry and part was still damp. That's the photo attached with the black dress on. Yesterday I was meeting a friend for drinks and again waited til the last minute to tackle my hair. This time I was going to try shingling but it wasn't working out. I decided to try a puff. I had tried to do it before and it always looked crazy to me, but this time I was finally successful. This morning before church I ran to the drug store to buy a headband that I could use to hold my puff back without it being visible. I found a pack and I'm pleased with the results. So here is my first successful puff!
Tonight I'm going to deep condition and will probably put some more fat twists in. Hope you ladies are enjoying this beautiful weather.Smile

PS. I taught Sunday School this morning for the age group 3-5 yrs old. I looked around and out of about 18 kids there was only one child with a relaxer. Most of them were natural. One little cutie had a puff similar to mine and that made me smile.

Thanks! No, I don't think they are. I don't really discuss my hair journey with them. I do have a blog and I've had people follow my blog and decide to go natural. I have several friends who are already natural though. When people do ask me about going natural, I try to make sure they understand the results are pretty and great, but they need to be prepared to put some work in..

Is that a comb headband you used for the puff?

I have a friend that wants to go natural but she hates doing her hair.

No, I actually bought some of those scrunchy headbands that are skinny and shaped like a big rubber band. i used that to pull my hair back and my hair covers it so you can't even see it. I just put on a rhinestone headband to make it look jazzier and not so plain. I think next time I will put a flower on one side of it.

Serenity23's - Fall Hair & Out & About Empty Monday - November 16

Post by Serenity23 16th November 2009, 11:23 pm

Last night I cowashed and then put some Hair Mayonnaise in my hair and put on a plastic cap and scarf for deep conditioning. I usually either sit under a bonnet hair dryer wiht my conditioning products or I sleep with them in overnight. This time I slept with the mayonnaise in overnight. When I washed it out this morning, I used some curly meringue to create another puff. I came home tonight and cowashed and put Organix Soothing Shea Butter conditioner, a mixture of coconut and olive oil and I spritzed with a water/glycerin mix. I then detangled with my paddle brush and put my hair is several really fat twists. I wasn't really trying to spend a whole lot of time on my hair tonight AND I like being able to alternate the size of twists that I do for different results.I can say that I am in love with my hair and texture. When I unravel the twists tomorrow, I'll be sure to take photos for you to see. If I had to pick a must have product, it would be the Organix Soothing Shea Butter conditioner.I love the way it smells and my hair is always soft and moisturized after using it. Question for you guys, I know some people use leavins. I don't do this, if you do use leaveins, what's the reason and what difference does it make with your hair?

Serenity23's - Fall Hair & Out & About Empty Re: Serenity23's - Fall Hair & Out & About

Post by nmoultry 17th November 2009, 10:30 am

Hi Serenity23,

I personally use leave-in conditioner to help with detangling, reduce my annoying frizzy friends, I also believe that it smooths my hair for my roller sets. Anywho as for what I've read:

Leave-In conditioners have become popular for their ability to add shine, smoothness and body to dull or lifeless hair.
Leave-In conditioners and treatments add topical polymers and botanical extracts that improve scalp and follicle health while restoring luster and manageability. Many conditioners also help detangle by adding lubrication through a polymer compound that adds smoothness to help separate follicle strands. This makes drying up to 30% faster and significantly reduces breaking by improving strength and elasticity to the follicle shaft.
Leave-In Conditioner Benefits include:

  • Increased shine and luster
  • Protection and repair of split-ends and frizziness
  • Sun and photo-damage sunscreen protection
  • Improves moisture content of dull or dry hair
  • Helps repair damaged hair

To improve shine, body, and to add luster to dry or dull hair, use a leave-in conditioner following drying for increased protection and color maintenance. You'll reduce breaking, split-ends and frizziness while repairing and protecting damaged hair.

I don't really have any of the above problems with my hair, but as a preventative measure I guess I can incorporate a leavin in my routine. So what do you use for a leavin?

Serenity23's - Fall Hair & Out & About Empty Tuesday, November 17

Post by Serenity23 17th November 2009, 11:01 am

I usually don't do my hair so early in the morning since I work from home. But this morning I had to stop by my son's school so I took my twists down early. These are my results. I am absolutely in love with my coils and curls. It still amazes me that I never knew what my hair would look like w/out a relaxer and the image that I had in my head is definitely not what I see now.

My question of the day, do you guys hear people talk about going natural or convincing other people to go natural when they dont' take care of their relaxed hair? Sometimes I think people think when you go natural it's "easier" and minimal maintenance, when in my experience that is far from the truth!

I always told when I was transitioning that going natural was going 2 be hard & require alot of maintenance. So far me my hair is still really short so it's quite easy & simple for me. BTW I heart your hair color!!!

Thank you! I don't think I was told anything b/c I kind of just made the decision and then once I was transitioning I started talking to other natural ladies about their hair. Even when I was wearing a TWA everyday, I still did a lot of conditioning and trying out different products. I just don't know why anyone would think being natural was less maintenance than being relaxed.

Lovin the hair Serenity. I didn't really investigate going natural until I did it. My sisters have been natural on and off for years but they have always liked doing hair so I just figured it was more work. And it is more work at HOME on my hair but I think it is because I am still in the experimental stage, trying to figure out what works for my hair. But I have completely eliminated salon visits so that is travel time and time sitting there getting it done that I have gotten back to I think it is a wash. Nevertheless, I wouldn't change a think about no longer being relaxed. My hair is growing fast and I love it. Plus I am a firm believer in tying my hair up and sleeping with something on my hair so that affects the amount of maintenance you need to do each day.

Serenity23's - Fall Hair & Out & About Empty Wednesday, Nov 18

Post by Serenity23 18th November 2009, 11:35 am

Morning Ladies!
Nothing new really going on with my hair today. I'm still wearing the twistout, I've just added a headband to it. I wanted to talk about hair inspiration today. When I first BC'd I looked in the mirror and saw a short afro that was very dry looking. I was not pleased! I came home and started looking on the net for other ladies rocking TWAs. At some point, I was looking in my baby book and found a photo of my mom rocking big hair with me as a baby. This was 1978. I'm not sure what she's wearing, but her hair was HUGE! LOL I decided to get the photo blowed up and framed and matted and it now hangs in my living room. Today I thought I'd share that photo with you guys and also a photo of my hair on the day I BC'd.
