I'm a rising senior and I have been transitioning for so long.. that I have no idea how much time has really passed. I'm guessing about two years?? When i first stopped getting perms I had know idea where I was headed. All I knew was that I was having an identity crisis and some things needed to change.
Hair has always had a very strong presence in my life. According to my family I was born with a thick head of hair and all it did was grow as my body grew. By the time I was six, it was down my back. My mom would style it in various numbers of braids and twists. On special occasions my mom would let me wear my hair down and it was just the best thing to me. The "general public" was always complementing me and telling me how lucky I was to have such beautiful hair. I took it all in and believed them until I went to middle school.
The sixth grade was my first encounter with lots of black girls, outside of church that is. And boy did they love to hate me and my hair. At the time i was still wearing my hair in braids and banded styles and they just ate me up. Eventually I gave into the pressure, spilled my guts to my mom about the things they said, and begged her to let me get a perm. Eventually she agreed and I was rocking shoulder length bone straight hair. ( I decided to cut it too.) Finally I felt like I was beginning to fit in.
Fast forward two more years and it's time for high school. I show up to this place with ready to have fun. But as the days and weeks went by, I wasn't liking the attention I was getting or the people, male & female, that I was attracting. My point of view on things changed very quickly. I felt a need to stand out and for everyone to outwardly see that I was not like the majority of the girls walking around my school.
And it occurred to me. Ditch the perm. Inspiration? My cousin. (12 years older than me, she has some beautiful curls.) I decided to see what its all about. And here I am two years later. I chose to transition and I've been slowly cutting off my permed ends. My seventeenth birthday is on the 29th and I'm getting a SERIOUS hair cut. The goal is to have only two inches of permed hair left to cut off.
I go through cycles where I am so into my hair, trying out new styles and everything but then.. I just get so fed up. That's how I found CurlyNikki, a fed up cycle. So this is my Curl Street Journal. I'll update as I please, with pictures every time.

Re: IndigoHarmony
What a liberating journey!! I find that more and more young ladies in high school are embracing their natural curls and making the decision to go against the expectation of their peers. I applaud you on your decisions and I'm so glad you found CN!!
What products are you using on your hair? Do you have a regiment?
Welcome to CS and I look forward to following your journey!!

It is an absolutely beautiful Sunday. I met my dad I church this morning with my little brothers in tow. Had time for a co-wash and to pin the front back. Then I put a dime size amount of Carol's Daughter Hair Honey throughout. I don't have a pic of that, but I do have pics of when I put it up in a battle against the heat.
If you look at the top part of all this hair you can see my permed ends. That's the reason for my haircut next weekend.

Re: IndigoHarmony
I believe I feel like attempting two strand twists tonight. They never turn out exactly how I want though. I'll post pics tonight or in the morning. I doubt I'll actually wear the twists out but we'll see.

Re: IndigoHarmony
Thanks for all the support. I love this place!
I currently use Carol's Daughter products, simply because its super convenient. I tell my dad I am running low on certain things and in a few days its at my door step. (He used their products as well when he had his little fro but he cut off around Easter. I was upset.)
I co-wash with either the Khoret Amen Conditioner or the Tui Conditioner. I love them both. The Khoret Amen conditioner leaves me hair feeling... more coarse I guess the word is. Must be the ingredients. When I need a real wash i use the Tui Shampoo. The Khoret Amen Shampoo did... nothing for my hair. And the Tui Shampoo is only a little better. I really need to get something else. When I first began transitionging I used Herbal Essences Hello Hydration but it didn't do much for me either.
I haven't experimented with much cuz it'd bother me for my parents to buy me all this stuff and then it turns out I don't even use. But I'm getting to the point now where I need to find what really works since summer iscoming up here and I plan to not whip out that flat iron, ever. What I really need is a fabulous moisturizer. People swear up and down about hair milk, father included, but that's not for me either.
Guess I'll start my two-strand twists now.

Its My Birthday today!! Seventeen! I would have loved to spend the day rocking a nice twist-out but after I week of exams, I literally passed out against my will while watching a movie with my little brother. No exciting plans today, just ready for tomorrow when my ma comes back from Turkey. I was planning on getting a haircut today but it looks like its getting pushed to next weekend. Oh well.

Re: IndigoHarmony
Hello there! I've just found your journal and I must say that I find your hairstory very refreshing. I wish I had made that decision in my youth. Life would be quite different now. Nothing like standing out for positive reasons, especially in high school.
Hope you had a great birthday!
