Best Advice & Worst Advice
Since embarking on your natural hair journey what is some of the best hair advice you have received and what is some of the worst?
Re: Best Advice & Worst Advice
Best advice: it's all about the moisture and protecting your ends and healthy hair is waaaaay more important than long hair
Worst advice: use grease for moisture [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: Best Advice & Worst Advice
Best Advice: Washing hair in sections and detangle under running water.
Worst Advice: "You should do a XYZ treatment." (without knowing my hair)
Trying all those "treatments" - they begin to counter each other and lead to hair worse than when I started.

Best advice: Moisture and NO heat.
Worst advice: "Why don't you just get a perm every six months".

Best advice: Less Is More aka Simplicity!
Worst advice: Product overload -- use X, Y, Z, A, B, and C to get this that and the other for a certain look.

Best advice: protective styles, hands down.
Worst advice: Don't get locs. Wench PLEASE! Just for that, I'm gonna grow my hair out like a MOFO so I can get locs BY THE END OF THE YEAR. And CN, you can hold me to it. =D

Re: Best Advice & Worst Advice
I would say the best I've gotten is not to handle my hair all the time and keep it moisturized.
The worst....this girl at my church offered to flat iron my hair and said she was a natural hair stylist! Good thing I already new better. lol

Re: Best Advice & Worst Advice
Best advice - keep hair in protective styles as much as possible, do henna treatments to strengthen hair, and seal ends.
Worst advice (actually received from a cousin who is a hairstylist) - keep my hair flat-ironed, because it 'looks better than that curly mess all over your head'. Seriously??? Get your mind right, cousin, 'cause it's all about healthy hair now, not a fried mess!

Re: Best Advice & Worst Advice
Best advice: Always make sure to keep hair (particularly the ends) moisturized. Also, using a wide tooth comb or Denman brush to detangle wet hair.
Worst advice: Just because a friend, a family member or a co-worker is also natural doesn't necessarily mean they know what they're doing. Case in point: my supervisor cut her locs off about six months ago, about six weeks after I went fully natural and is sporting a TWA. She raved about Miss Jessie's Curly Pudding. So I went and bought it and it ended up drying out my hair. I'd also bought the Baby Buttercreme to use in conjunction with the Curly Pudding and it just sat on top of my hair. In short, I hated the products and that I'd wasted so much money on them (They were $60 total, y'all). I was telling my supervisor this about six weeks ago and she said, "Just use Luster's Pink Oil Moisturizer with the Curly Pudding." A product I swore off forever when I went fully natural. Ummm, no thank you.

That is so TRUE! I want to add to that not everyone with long hair knows what they are doing either. There some people that have always had long hair since childhood and due to their current long hair they have a cult-like following.
Re: Best Advice & Worst Advice
Best advise... Keep your hair moisturized and pay attention to the care you give to your ends. Keep them moisturized. Also, being told how to style and maintain my hair using natural products has been absolutely awesome AND a money saver.. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Worst advise.... From a hair dresser.. "Why are you going relaxer free? You have good hair! Your hair can handle relaxers. That's not really a good option for you. Please don't go natural!!!!"
I guess I had my hands in her pocket book when I dropped that on her. LOL!

Re: Best Advice & Worst Advice
Best advice: Don't perm it!!!--said by my sister, after seeing my growth after 1 year, who just can't fathom not relaxing her hair, but supports me in my transition.
Worst: "Your hair won't have a curl pattern because you're....BLACK!! It might be curly if you were mixed and had "good" hair." [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] This was the dumbest, most IGNORANT ish I've ever heard! Nd it was said by my ex boyfriend who clearly doesn't know a thing about ANYbody's hair. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Re: Best Advice & Worst Advice
Best Advice: Condition Condition Condition
Worst Advice: Change a light bulb (in my high voltage apt.) so that I wont "need" a perm!
