This is August 2010.
I cannot believe the transformation in my hair. Looking back, it looked so scraggly and undefined. I had no idea what I was doing. Then I discovered amla and my hair world changed and my hair started to grow, grow, grow! I ran out of Amla in February and the indian store JUST got it back in so maybe I can get more growth.
Beautiful!!! I love your lush hair! I want you and Lynnieluve to share your secrets. I have my Amla & Shikakai, I know ayurvedic is the truth, but I'd love to know how your using it. I was mixing 1 tsp of amla and 2 tsps of shikakai and putting them through my coffee maker, allowing to cool and then washing my hair. After a deep conditioner, my hair didn't shed, it was silky and perfect. However, I was relaxed, so I have yet to see how it will do natural.

You are too kind! Lynnieluve has AWESOME hair! I was natural for years but in November, I finally started "feeding" my hair. First of all, I cannot believe I went around looking like that in that November picture . Ooooh and I thought that was cute, lol!
I started trying to make my hair look better by visiting my local indian store. I asked the woman behind the counter to tell me what hair products she had to make my hair shiney, healthy and retain length. She filled up my basket with these things and told me these things about those products:
1. Amla - to promote hair growth and strength. Adds shine and good for scalp
2. Henna (Jamila) - to strengthen and retain length. Adds shine
3. Vatika Coconut oil - to penetrate the hair shaft and add shine
4. Vatika Enriched Olive oil - to seal and add shine
5. Ancient Formula Almond Herbal Hair Oil - to penetrate the scalp to promote growth
6. Nyle Herbal Shampoo - when using henna, you must use Nyle to wash it out she said
7. Madra Sunflower Oil - for oil washes and moisturize
I am telling you, that woman had a braid down her back as long as my leg and as thick as my arm.
When I used these 7 products in conjunction with each other. I gained about 6 to 8 inches in 4 months. I know that sounds crazy but the pics don't lie! I even started to grow new hair from my scalp. In my hair, I have a 7 inch twa within my hair. I did not think that I would sprout new hair from the scalp but that is ok. I will take it! WHen my hair grows, my scalp itches like crazy. My scalp itched for 4 months and it drove me crazy but I knew that meant growth.
Anyway, from November to February, I has every oil known to man in my hair. I started with the Amla. Even though my Dh says it smells like an old man's urinal I used it every day and I did not wash it out. I put Amla in my conditioner, shampoo, henna and some in my shea butter. THe Madra Sunflower oil was used as an oil wash. She said that you do it once a week on dry clean hair. Pour the oil onto your hair and massage it into the HAIR, not the scalp. Sit under a dryer if you can for at least 30 minutes. Then wash out with the Nyle.
She said that when using herbal products you have to use an herbal shampoo. She said that Nyle and Henna go hand in hand. That is about it. I have not had Amla since February but I just got some so I hope that the growth will start back up. I hope that helps!
OOOOOOHHHHH, I have most of these products except the sunflower and almond oils and had not heard of them. I really, really like the Vatika, do you use it to seal in moisture after your conditioning process? I like it to seal. I had no idea, I could use amla all the time! I would love to add it to my conditioner and my leave-in. I have henna from my local indian store, but its not the Jamila brand. I really only use it for color release, do you get a color release when you use it? I mix mine with honey, water and olive oil and put it on with a conditioning cap for about 40 minutes or so. Thank you, thank you, I will be "feeding my hair" much more often.

Shampoo once a week (Creme of Nature or KBB Conditioning Shampoo)
Detangle using Giovanni Smooth As Silk or Aussie Moist
Deep Condition once a week (Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque or EVOO/coconut oil combo)
Leave in conditioner - Modified KimmayTube Leave in
Oil - Organic Virgin Coconut oil (unrefined)
Butters - my shea butter mix or Koils By Nature Hair and Body Butter
Gel - Koils By Nature Eucalyptus gel
Protein Treatment once a month (Giovanni Smooth As Silk Extreme Protein)
Protective Styles 90-95% of the time
That's it!!!
I currently rotate with the green label CON and just starting using Aussie Moist last week, I love it!! I went to Whole Foods and bought the ingredients for the Kimmaytube leave-in, so I'll be mixing this weekend. Are you using your butters daily or just to twist? I am looking for a good moisturizer I can use daily. Thank you, I'm glad to know prot styling was a big part. I am currently keeping my hair cornrowed and rocking my wigs.
Between you and Dream Merchant in no time, I should have "hair to there". Thanks a million! I'm putting these into practice.

Re: Then and Now
Karamel Diva-I am sure you are well on your way! You can do without the Almond Oil and Sunflower. I use the vatika to moisturize my twists in the moring and in the evening. I use the henna for the strengthening agents. I do like the color it deposits too.

I only use the butters to twist my hair. I left off that I use the Aloe Spritzer by Butters N Bars and seal with coconut oil to moisturize my twist during the week. This week I used Taliah Waajid's Protective Mist Bodifier and I think I like it!!!

Re: Then and Now
@ DreamMerchant - that is a lot of growth in four months and really inspirational! I have definitely got to start incorporating Amla and Brahmi back into my regimen.

I did not even know it grew that much until I posted those picks the other day. I think I have inspired myself. I am very excited to see where my hair is after this challenge. I love looking at all of these hair pictures!
