Braiding with thread!?

I don't know if this kind of braiding is really known, but way back in Nigeria I often used to get threads in my hair. I's been a looong time since I've had threads the last time, but people always tell me that it will make hair to grow. I'm not so sure about that but when you take out the threads after a week, it makes it reeeeaally straight.
I don't really like how it looks but still I want to try it out very soon and thought that someone might know more.
