Different oils do different things Empty Different oils do different things

Post by DreamMerchant 26th February 2010, 2:02 am

I was getting my hair ready for tomorrow and I started thinking about the trillion oils I have. My husband said "They are oils and they do the same thing.". That is so not true. Oils have different weights and nourishing benefits. Here is the list I came up with as to how I use my oils. These things work for my hair.

Light oils: grapeseed oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, pumpkin oil, amla oil. I use these as quick shine enhancers when I have my twistouts or braidouts. I might even put them on as a pre-poo or pre-cowash. These are great to add to conditioners and your spray bottle when you spritz your hair. Just give it a good shake. Lemon oil is good for helping your scalp produce sebum and that helps keep dandruff away. Cactus oil is great for general health of hair and adds volume if you have fine hair.

Medium oils: Olive oil, glycerin, Hesh Almond oil blend, safflower oil. I may use these as a layering product under Eco styler gel. I also use them to seal ends when doing a roller set. Keeps moisture in the hair.

Heavy oils: Castor oil, shea butter, mango butter. Some of these have natural UV protectants for the hair. These are great for the winter and for layering and sealing the ends. They keep my two strand twists looking good until I take them down.

How are you using your oil products?

I agree that castor oil is a must for winter. Its the oil that has saved my hair from drying out to death this winter!! lol

I use olive oil in my leave-in conditioning treatments for extra moisture.

I'm also thinking of adding coconut oil to my routine.. maybe apply it to my scalp before shampooing. I've never tried coconut oil.. Any suggestions/tips?

@nikkinixnicole I use coconut oil for prepoo on scalp and hair, also everyday as my moisture/oil it gives me good shine. it's said to be one of the oils that actually penetrates the hair because the molecules are so small they seep into the hairs cortex and moisturize. (I hope that's the right terminology, i'm no hair scientist lol) I recently read abotu the science behid some oils here @Natural Haven

Most like the hair's natural sebum. I use it all the time

I use the basic oils, for example unprocessed coconut, jojoba, avocado. But I also use more unusual oils like monoi de tahiti oil and pomegranate oil.

But I prefer butters. I make body and skin butters, and like to use a bunch of stuff. If makes it really concentrated, and you really only need a touch to do it's job. Te main ones I suse are raw shea butter, raw mango butter, hemp seed butter, kokum butter, illipe butter, aloe butter, avocado butter, cupuacu butter

Hi Blonde,

Where can I purchase the alternative butters? I already have unrefined 100% shea butter and I use that often.

Here is my latest shea butter mix...shea butter, coconut oil, castor oil, EVOO and a few drops of vitamin E oil. Roxie (my hair) loves it. It is very moisturizing and makes my hair soft.

jojoba oil was actually the first oil I bought and I definitely like it. No smell and I would put it in the category of light oil. I find it's the perfect oil on it's own for my relaxed ends but not necessarily with my new growth if that makes sense. I use it as a sealant on my twist outs and I use it in my homemade mixes with shea butter or for water bottle spritz.

I think i went a little crazy with the oils...

I have: jojoba oil, olive oil, coconut oil, sweet almond oil, vitamin E oil, Castor oil, avocado oil, Tea tree oil, peppermint oil, lavender EO, Vanilla EO.... I don't think i've missed any

I made a shea butter mix with olive oil, sweet almond oil, vitamin e, castor oil and vanilla oil and my hair likes it. it keeps it really soft and moisturized....

in the morning i mix my castor oil with olive oil and coconut oil and put it in my hair to make it shiny and seal the moisture in.

I also have a leave in spritz i use for my hair with water, olive oil, castor oil, peppermint oil and conditioner

I use them in my hair/skin butter. I have been told I should market it, so I am looking into trademarking the recipe....sorry! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I just found this thread...thanks!

I just bought safflower oil in place of olive oil, but hadn't checked it out yet. There have a been a few people I've come across who use it in place of olive oil for reasons such as cost and smell. I'm happy to see it in the same category as olive oil.

Has anyone else used safflower oil or know where I can find more information on it for hair and skin?

Has anyone used SUNFLOWER oil? I purchased 100% pure sunflower oil today and I also did some research...I think I may use when I deep condition my hair. Here is what I found on Sunflower oil:

Product Description: Sunflower Oil is rich in essential fatty acids. It is easily absorbed with a light texture, and can be used on all skin types. This oil is ideal for use in skin care products, hair conditioners and bath oils. (www.desertwhale.com)

@ VEE I use sunflower oil. I use it with castor oil when I cleanse my skin with the oil cleansing method. I also mixed it with castor oil and used it as a deep conditioner. I applied the castor oil and sunflower oil to dry hair before washing my hair and sat under my hair steamer. My hair was really soft and easy to detangle once I rinsed it. I am not really a fan of olive oil so I use the sunflower oil to replace the olive oil.
