Protein Treatments
Hello Curlies =)
I am new to the forum and I am very interested to know about protein treatments. I always see people talking about them on anything that mentions natural hair and I want to know how they work, what types you can get (I always see something about Aphogee), where you can buy them, etc. For those of you who have used them, have you seen major improvements in your hair? I have some heat damage and the hair on the sides of my head need some strengthening. I'm looking for something a little easier (and cheaper) than henna...
Thanks,
Chris

Re: Protein Treatments
Have you made sure that you need them? If you don't they can make your hair hard. I don't do them because I get a lot of protein in my diet so it balances out.
I do hear of Aphogee mentioned a lot for protein treatments.
Here's an article that may help: http://blackhair.about.com/od/basiccare/p/differentproteintreatments.htm
And CurlyNikki had a blog post about them: http://www.curlynikki.com/2009/10/curl-whisperer-on-protein-treatments.html

Re: Protein Treatments
egg protein treatments are good. Don't do them too often, but they yield great results.

Re: Protein Treatments
How do you do an egg protein treatment...Does that just involve putting raw eggs on the hair?

Yep. But make sure you rinse with cold water. If the water to warm the egg will cook and that is not a good look...scrambled eggs in your hair, LOL.

You know, I was wondering about the protein thing, my hair really can't take it. I thought maybe just can't have it often and then when I think I need it I don't, and it dawned upon me that it might be because I have a diet rich in protein so maybe that's why I don't need it...but it was just a theory. But now I see I'm not too far off.
Re: Protein Treatments
I have also read great things about Aphogee's protein treatments. I haven't personally tried it. I have done the egg treatments at home and a coconut milk & liquid aminos treatment. Both worked well but my hair loves protein!

Is there a way that you can tell if you need them or not?

I used the information presented in this article: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/278612/the_fine_art_of_protein_and_moisture.html?cat=69
It was helpful in helping me decide what to do

Hm, I think I was thinking of the Aphogee Keratin Two Minute Reconstructor...I picked it up the other day and saw it had mineral oil in it so I put it back down..
Re: Protein Treatments
The must have changed their formula, websites seem to always be the last thing updated
Re: Protein Treatments
I have been trying Coconut Milk and regular condtioner for protein treatments and it have been working great. The only thing is not to do it too often. I usually do it once or twice a month. [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
