Re: starting dreads....
Try the nappturality forums...there a very active loc community there...but here is what i have gathered:
Locks could be started in many ways
-Freeform: where hair is just not not combed and separated into separate parts everytime it is washed.
-Sisterlocks: which is a patented method of locking hair into tiny portions. Using "special equipment and gridding method" This is very expensive but very professional looking and very versatile.
-Comb coils: hair is twisted into curls and palm rolled for maintainance. This method gives smooth looking locks. However it tends to unravel if you wash your hair very often.
-(My favorite) Bradelocz method: Where hair is braided and allowed to loc. It is maintained by latching using a latch hook, hair pin or nappy lock tool. This is good for one with an active lifestyle: hair can be washed/rinsed wthout the fear of unravelling. Also in colder countries( in my country it is summer all year long ) locks could be palm rolled during winter months. This could also be done using two strand twists
Hope this helps!

I 'm not sure but i think you have to twist and wait until they lock than re twist that sister lock looks gorgeous though

Re: starting dreads....
I've had locs before, twice actually, and i started them from two strand twists that I did myself. If you want to be more connected to your locs then you I wouls suggest doing them yourself. not to say that if you get them professionally started that you won't be as connected, but that's how i felt. But like zanajh said, nappturality.com has a lot of information. Another place to go is locrocker.com, she has some insight as well as links you can refer to.

thanx for the quick response @lynnieluv
i watched the video and i'm guessing if i was to get locs it would take some practice, but this is the method i would use b/c i could most likely catch my edges better looks like she started w/ the braiding method where u allow ur hair to loc up

Re: starting dreads....
You've got done good advice here.
I had locs for almost five years and have been starting them for other people for eight yrs. I did mine from two strand twists and let them loc. No tools needed. Also i recommend finding a good beeswax-free, petroleum-free hair cream/gel.

Re: starting dreads....
the latch hook method seems like alot of work lol. I've been considering getting locks to cut down on my styling time, but I would want my locs small like the woman in the video's, and it seems like it would take a lot of time to use the latch hook method.
I'm interested in hearing about how to keep the locs looking fresh/ neat at the roots also without using a latch hook

I used ORS lock and twist gel or ampro clear ice most of the time. in order to make them look neat at the roots, i would twist them after they were freshly washed and still damp, clip them with duck bill or two prong clips and sit under the hooded dryer til the roots were set, but most times i didn't worry about them being super duper neat. that was part of the joy of having locs for me and i didn't want my hair to look scalpy. also, overgrooming can result in loc loss so i would be careful to avoid that. here's a couple of pics of my day to day hair (meaning not freshly twisted)

@ queenshakira...
o ok that's cool...also, what do u do about setting ur hair and making sure it's neat at the root (if u want them that way) if u do not have a sit under dryer?
