I just did my first henna as well today. Interesting experience. Wish I could have taken pics to show everyone the mess I made in my bathroom! LoL
Cant wait to see the results tomorrow when I wash it out!

Yea, I was a little nervous about the mess. Thankfully it wasn't too bad. The biggest mess I mad was on myself. I had it all over my back and ears, I still can't figure out how it got down my back. lol

Love how it refreshed your color and made it pop!
What made you use yogurt in your mix (I've thought about it using it in my mixes, and heard of other people using it, then I read recently on a site--i think Hennaforhair.com--not to use it so then I was all confused lol)?

I read on one of the many sites that I visited that mixing with yogurt will not dry out hair. Then I started thinking about how liked yogurt anyway and I assumed I couldn't go wrong. It worked and I think the thickness made it easier to apply.

When I went to their store (Empire) the lady was telling me not to mix it with yogurt because it's not acidic so it will give you less dye and because the dairy fat does something, I don't remember what though.
But congrats are in order, I really wish more people knew about and used henna!
Re: My first Henna
I think where I read that it said the yogurt will "munch" on dandruff. I've never had a dandruff issue so I guess it probably wouldnt do much to hurt me.
I used honey, couple splashes of lemon and lime juice and green tea and it worked just fine for me.
Even after only one application, my hair already is much easier to detangle, its softer, and much shinier! I looooove henna!

That sounds about right because the scalp makes natural yeast and typically it's warm up there lol
Re: My first Henna
Now I'm confused. Because yogurt can be used to get rid of a yeast infection. I would assume that if it gets rid of that yeast that it would also get rid of the dandruff yeast.
Maybe the yogurt works for some and not so well for others. I still had the color effect but the acid may have possibly made it brighter. I just didn't like the idea of acid sitting on my hair for hours.

Re: My first Henna
I've read where alot of people had issues with dry hair from the acid.
I just took a chance and used it because I wanted to make sure the dye released quickly. My hair did not dry out at all but I did make sure after I washed the henna out that I used a mosturizing deep treatment and sat under a hooded dryer to be safe...
I also had a previous chemical color on my hair so my color came out really bright. I think I read that it will darken after it oxidizes in a couple days.

Actually yogurt does contain acid. It is called lactic acid.

Re: My first Henna
I was thinking about doing my first henna treatment soon. However, I have a TWA, and I haven't really heard any curlies with TWAs talk about henna. Is it okay for curlies with TWAs do henna or am I rushing things??

Re: My first Henna
@NaturallyFierce88 I cant see why not. It'll possibly give a redder color, a more defined curl pattern and its conditioning to the hair if nothing else. Give it a try. I know I will be in the very near future!!!

Re: My first Henna
I just received my box of Jamilla henna in the mail today!!!!!! Yay!!!! Can't wait to try it...but I haven't figured out what mix I want (yogurt? green tea? honey? which is better?). My hair is black now (not like my photo taken back in April)...so hopefully my hair doesn't look too red. Maybe I should buy some indigo (to keep it black) first?????

I'm new to the natural scene. It has been about two months being kinky/curly after a two year unintentional weave transition. In any case, curlynikki has been an inspiration and motivation to embrace my NATURAL hair (my intention was to be a pressed natural). I could say sooo much more but this thread topic is on henna...I have been desperately trying to suppress the urge to get on my soap box and express the joy of being natural/free to all my friends and family that it is bursting out of me. Lol...sorry for the ramble. Anyway, I really just wanted to say that I am in the midst of my first henna experience...scared, anxious, and excited

Wow, I had a similar "accidental weave transition" for 2 yrs! I've always gone back and forth with being relaxed or a pressed natural since 12 yrs old. Reading this thread (and a few others) made me think about henna for my new natural hair styling. I literally have my henna mix in my head right now! I was so excited last night that I could barely sleep. It felt like Christmas. I can't wait to see the results! I hope you have as much fun with your first henna experience as I am right now!
