Buying the ingredients in your favorite product?

I don't know if anyone has done this, but my hair really loves my conditioner. So I looked at the first 5 ingredients which are: Deionized water, Hydrolyzed Keratin, Cottonseed Oil, Panthenol, and Balsam Peru. And I bought the cottonseed oil, and the balsam peru. I could'nt find any panthenol on the site I was on, but I heard it is buyable. I also bought the 6th ingredient which is olive oil, and I plan to use all this stuff as a leave in with part of another conditioner and water. (package comes today!) I guess I don't want to leave protein my hair even though my hair loves it.

So have any of you naturals bought the ingredients out your favorite products?

Yes I have. I have also made my own lotions and hair products. I've made leave-ins and pomades (Hair butters). If you are ready to formulate, here is a good place to get recipes and good safe instructions.

One thing I've found from this site and from researching the ingredients on my favorite products is that body lotions and hair conditioners have a lot in common. In fact, they are often the same thing with slightly different emulsifiers.Leave-in Conditioner

I've just been waiting to run out of one of my favorite conditioners! I've already gotten some of the ingredients to see if I can make it myself.

I understand, its a little much to begin with. Look at some of the other links, like the conditioner bar and the body butters. She uses a lot of recognizable ingredients. She also gives guidelines for substituting man-made ingredients for things like regular oils and stuff. I found reading her blog helpful when trying to understand what my hair likes and why something doesn't work.

When I go to the store, I can tell right away which products will live up to the hype or not. That's why I won't buy some of the more expensive brands. The active ingredients are the same unless the product is for a medical condition.

@Madeaj: Its not too much, I just dont want to use ingredients for the sake of the product and not for the sake of my hair.

I've been making my own hair butters for a while (still nervous about delving into lotions since I'll need to add emulsifiers and preservatives, but Madeaj's links might give me the courage!), but I only recently started adding Cupuacu and Murumuru butters to them after hearing such good things about Anita Grant's butters, which include them as ingredients in addition to stuff I was already using. I also started adding coconut oil to my hair butter after reading that it had similar effects to Ojon, but was much, much cheaper.

Lotions are the easiest thing next to plain butters. Look at the home page of the homepage, she just did a series on basic lotions. A basic lotion is water, oil, emulsifiers, fragrance and preservative. Its what you use and how much you use determines whether you have a thick cream or a thin facial lotion.

I find it very interesting. I made a all over body and hair butter that is great. I am about to make a facial lotion. I made a healing skin balm for my father and one for my stepmother. I got requests from my sister for a nice moisturiser and one for my nephew's acne prone skin. I am having so much fun with this.

Thanks for the link! I think I'll definitely try a lotion the next time I re-order my ingredients. I've been pretty happy with my hair butter and body butter, but adding lotions to the mix would be great.
