Lucy's BACK!!
Ok, I gonna keep this nice and sweet because the nice long paragraph I had before just deleted itself for no good reason....sigh. Here we go...
Been relaxed since the age of 11 (only had braids and pressed hair until then)
Started natural journey in Sept 2009 as a 5 month "experiment"
Almost 8 months later, I'm in kinky twists and got curious....
Need I say more....?

When I started, I was going for 5 months and then it turn to a year....but I am seriously considering BCing once I take these twists out especially after today's mini chop episode.

Have you talked this over with your mom? I remember you saying she is a stylist and thinks you dont know what you are doing.

I actually showed her the mini chop and she was like "So what are you planning to do once you take all your twists out?" I was like "Ummm....well, I gonna wash it and...." and she was like "No, you wash a car...you are going to shampoo it....?" and I was like "I was gonna shampoo it and condition it and maybe...." and then she cuts me off and said, "You really should go back in your twists because you look so darling in them". So I kinda told her about cutting it and told her I already cut off the relaxed ends in my mini chop...she just laugh. Mind you, I have been telling her about BCing for a couple of weeks and she kinda like and smiles....so I think she's neutral on the topic. My lil sis wants to cut my hair, but she just revealed to me that she doesn't know how to cut curly hair....oh dear.

Re: Lucy's New Updo!!
Have you checked out BlackOnyx's video on how to do your own BC? If you dont feel comfortable doing, maybe your sister can watch the video (I hope she will watch it) and then cut your hair. I self BC'd after 4 months of transitioning. I watched that video about 3 or 4 times the week before I cut my hair. It's not hard to do....but you will need someone to cut the back for you, if you do it yourself.

Re: Lucy's New Updo!!
Since I'm in a good mood, I'm going to tell my hair story.
Ever since my mom could do my hair, I have been a walking advertisement. I'm not being mean...I'm keeping it real because I do remember my mom telling me that my hair represented the salon and so my hair had be in tip top shape. So began the press and curl sessions and being in and out braids for years until the age of 11 when I got a relaxer. Yet, I always wondered about going natural and I always saw myself grown up with locs for some reason, but the thought was kept in the back of head for a long time.
Fast foward to Spring 2009: I just got out of some braids and had a lot of new growth. My mom gave me some highlights and waited several weeks before giving me a relaxer. Yet, my lil sis gave me a relaxer and it didn't take. My hair was not relaxed all the way through and come to find out that my new growth grows at different rates and so the normal amount of relaxer may not be enough for some parts of my hair. So I was stuck for a couple of months with my hair like that and then summer came with its humidity which basically kept my hair in a ponytail for the majority of the season regardless of the hairstyles my mother gave me. Once fall came through, I was seriously thinking about finding ways to do my hair on my own. So I turned to youtube and soon I was watching natural hair videos, but I couldn't duplicate some of the hairstyles because my relaxed hair was sooo straight so I decided to do an experiment: Go five months without relaxer and see what happens. I knew it wouldn't be so bad because I usually stretched my relaxers 2-3 months. If I didn't like what I see, I could relax. Well, it has been almost 8 months and although my transition has been through ups and downs, I really loving it right now.

Re: Lucy's New Updo!!
i bc'd after i took out my kinky twists...it was like i took out a twist, sprayed with a conditioner/water mix, twirled it a little so i could really tell the difference from the relaxed hair and new growth and just snipped, then i took out the next twist and did the same thing until i was done...i think you should do it ...i just pictured your BC in my head & it is fierce lol

Lol, I already snipped the bottom row of my hair and from afar, it looks like a big poof but up close there are lil curls here and there. I showed my mom and she still asked what I'm planned on doing after I took all the twists out and I kept saying I just do a twist out. Yet, Mama aint having it: she kept saying "How bout you flat-iron it?" so I told her she can flat iron it IF she cut the rest of my relaxed ends off. I have yet to hear a response from her....I may have to BC on the sly with my lil sister helping me out, lol!

Re: Lucy's New Updo!!
I had an interesting conversation with my mom today after I told her about a healthy recipe that I found on the internet and it went something like this:
Mom: You know, I have some natural children!
Me: Well, I could be more natural if these relaxed ends were cut off. *Sly smile*
Silence
Mom: I don't want to deal with your ugly hair.
Me: What?! Ugly hair?! What you mean?
Silence
Me: Mom?! What do you mean by ugly hair?
Mom: I trying to think of another word besides ugly....
Me: What do you mean by ugly? Do you mean the hair before I went into twists?
Mom: Yes....
Me: Well, the reason why my hair was "ugly" was because of the relaxed ends. Once the relaxed ends are cut off, my hairstyles will look better.
Mom: Why don't you go back into twists after you take your twists out?
Me: How come? You don't want to see me in my natural hair? Don't you think I'd look cute with a curly fro and a headband?
Silence
Mom: Why don't you just grow your hair out in twists...at least until you hair is this length. *points to my collarbone*
Me: Will you cut my relaxed ends off before I go back to twists?
Silence
Mom: Ok....you know it will be short right?
Me: Of course, I know it will be short! *Shows her my natural back row of hair*
Mom: Ok.
Victory! What Mama doesn't know is that my stretched natural hair in the back reaches to the middle of my neck so it won't be long before it reaches the collarbone! Meanwhile, I gonna have to find a way to wear my natural hair in cute way that satisfy mother dear. *Looks for cute headbands*

Re: Lucy's New Updo!!
I'm sitting here in my mom's salon...contemplating whether to do something crazy and self-BC in front of all the customers here . Yet, I can't...why you may ask? Instead of just cutting the relaxed ends off, I'm just got a blow-out and my curly new growth is now straight. Sigh....mother dear refused to cut my hair because I quote "The new growth is too short" and "Short hair requires more maintenance than longer hair" . Really, Mama? Oh and here's the kicker, while she detangling the life of out of my transitioning hair with, I mentioned that the only reason why my hair is so tangled is because of the relaxed ends. Of course, she denies this and said that my new growth is causing all the problems. I doing the best I can to keep my mouth shut...and I trying to stay away from scissors at the moment, lol!

Re: Lucy's New Updo!!
Your mother is interesting. . . according to your profile you're 21, why not just go somewhere else and get it cut if you want it cut off? It's your hair Or you can watch some YouTube vids on how to do it yourself and have a friend cut the back for you. Once it's cut there's really not much she can do about it, and if you don't like it you can still put in twists.
Re: Lucy's New Updo!!
I am praying you get your mom to see past the things society deem normal and see the beautiful you!!
