My Journey to natural!!
Hello everyone!
I'm so glad I found this website. This is my first time officially going natural (by my own choice), although have many times skipped relaxers for lack of funds, lol. I decided last year that I wanted to go natural, but never had the courage or the know-how really. So I just kept relaxing my hair. It's amazing that I found this site. I was not even looking for natural hair care or anything. I was looking for instructions on how to do kinky twists, and somehow found this site. I am so glad this is here.
Now a little about me:
I'm not too sure why my mom relaxed my hair but I remember having one in 3rd grade. My hair was never longer than my shoulders and always a hassle. One summer after 5th grade, while visiting aunt, I let my hair get really matted. My mom sent me to my aunts house with braids, but after my aunt took them out about 2 weeks later, I was responsible for my hair. We swam, we did it all, except for my hair. So one night my hair was really hard to comb, I decided to cut out a few plugs to make combing easier, LOL. I remember counting 5 plugs. I was sure no one would notice. Needless to say when my mom picked me up, she did and chopped all my hair off. I had a taper at 11 years old. I felt like the ugliest thing alive! By the time school had come back around, we went back to relaxer, and I had enough hair for a finger wave. I thought I was the business. That was style until my hair grew long enough for a pony.
While pregnant in 2003, I cut my hair in a shorter style because of split ends, (never noticed that pregnancy growth that others do) and it hasn't really grown back out since then, it always stalls right past my ear.
So now I am transitioning with that length of hair and I must say it's a lot harder than with long hair. Now that I have the puffiness, my easy to do ponytails are a lot harder to make lay down.
Enough of that here are some pics
1. Me at 2 yrs old
2. Me with a relaxer, 2009
3. My transitioning hair, after a cowash, and with a braidout
Thanks Nikki for this amazing website, and thanks to all the lovely ladies here who are my inspiration!!!

Re: My Journey to natural!!
Welcome to the block. How long will you be transitioning? Will you be doing protective styles? Moisture is the key. Condition condition condition

Thanks for the info! I hope to transition at least 6 months. But I'll go as long as I can. It's really hard. I'm still learning to moisturize, even though I use my shea butter mix and conditioning spray daily, I have dry brittle roots. I think I'm going to have to break down and either flat iron or use a hot comb.
I've been wearing a slick back ponytail. Tonight I'm going to get the top of my hair braided and put the back in a drawstring pony. Next weekend I think I will try some crochet braids/weave or whatever it's called. lol
Cute avi. Thanks for the tips! Keep em coming, I need all I can get.

Aww, thanks. I really want them to come back. My mother keeps saying "you had long hair as a child, take care of it and you it'll come back ". Must've been before the relaxer cause I don't remember it LOL and have no pics! : ( . Thanks for love!

Re: My Journey to natural!!
I felt the same way about my childhood hair. There's only one picture of me as a 5 year old with hair to the top of my butt. Don't ask me where it went. I can't get past shoulder lenght as of yet, but hopefull taking better care of my hair will help. Enjoy the natural Journey.

Re: My Journey to natural!!
Hey Zee,
I saw your update. Lay off the goody's, lol! Kidding. But, I did read where A's mom on the site Beads Braids and Beyond oils her bands before putting them on the hair. If you really like wearing them, maybe you could try her method of oiling the bands.
Anyway, sorry I didn't see it back then but just go to your profile and click on "Signature" and paste this code:
CSJ
Oops! Well, at least you know it works, lol!
Go to your profile, click signature then type this in: <
Right after that type this in: a
Then space bar once
Right after that type: href=
Then right after that type the web address for your journal in quotation marks
Then right after that type this in right after the web address: >CSJ
Then right after that type this in: <
Then right after that type this in: /
Then right after that type this in: a
Then right after that type this in: >
Then save it.
That should work.

Re: My Journey to natural!!
Really? Maybe that's why I always get that, "Doesn't she look like..." comment, lol! If I had just a penny for every time I've heard that, I'd be a bazillionaire!
Thanks!
Thanks!
