Coconut Oil or Coconut Milk Empty Coconut Oil or Coconut Milk

Post by yldthng 15th February 2011, 2:21 pm

Yeah, I know, I said that wasn't gonna purchase anything else natural-hair related for a minute, BUT, I wanna get some coconut whatever.

I've seen some people say oil, and others say milk. I want the oil, right?

When I was at WallyWorld yesterday, I saw coconut oil in the cooking section - both refined and unrefined. I'm assuming I should get unrefined, right?

Does it matter if it comes from Wal-Mart, or should I really purchase it from a Health Food Store?

If you have a brand you love, please list it for me.

Thanks in advance . . .

I believe coconut oil is coconut oil, as long as it is 100 percent unrefined. It should be cold pressed too. I have never tried coconut milk, but dont they uses it as a protein? I believe you only use the milk if your making a dc treatment. HTH

i got some coconut oil i use the first one i tried was parachute a small size than i loved it so much i got a big jar from trader joes its called 360 and its unrefined and cost me less than 7 dollars i estimate it will last me at least 8 months and i use it in every thing from deep conditioners sometimes , to shea butter mix to leave in mixes great staple for natural being that coconut oils is a one of the very rare oils that actually penetrate the hair follicles , coconut milk i got a can one to experiment with the other day so i can't really speak from experience but i plan on trying this "natural relaxer " with it and see and add it to some mixes , but so far i have heard it is a great moisturizing hair softener so i would get a sample in both and experiment before i buy one or continue to get both Smile

I I love you COCONUT OIL!! I use it to prepoo, seal, in my dc, on my skin. Girl just everything! I buy mine from the HFS (though I don't think it matters where you choose to get it from) for like $7.99 for a 14 oz a jar. The brand name I use is Tree of Life. Its organic and expeller pressed. So the fragrance is still present. Here is a link to help you figure out if you want to use refined or unrefined. http://www.ehow.com/about_5392760_refined-vs-unrefined-coconut-oil.html HTH!

Thanks ladies!

I bought both kinds - the unrefined organic for my hair and the refined to experiment with in the kitchen.

Walmart sells both the Spectrum and the Nutiva brand coconut oils, which are also sold in Whole Foods and the Vitamin Shoppe.

Yep - those ones were over by the cooking oils. They also had the Spring Valley Extra Virgin Coconut Oil over by the vitamins.

Edited to add this - just read it on a "benefits of coconut oil" website → "A word of warning about coconut oils labeled as extra virgin. Experts note that there is no other – or more virginal – process of extracting oil from coconuts and the concept of the “extra” is nothing more than a marketing ploy."

I love coconut oil. I use it for everything hair and body. I even like cooking with it (the kitchen has its own supply!)

I have not tried coconut milk on my hair but it's on the horizon. I had some left over from soap making and decided to use the remaining milk as a facial mask. Well, I love it. So I'll probably incorporate into the hair regime.

I use coconut oil weekly, but I have been hearing about a lot of ladies using coconut milk. I haven't tried it myself yet, but I plan to.

jazzygurll: if you are looking for coconut milk, check the international aisle at publix (or any grocer). it's usually with the asian foods.

coconut oil however can be found at the international markets, health food stores, and the upmarket organic grocers like Whole Foods.
