Preventing Bun Damage Empty Preventing Bun Damage

Post by chynadoll8799 15th February 2011, 7:03 pm

I am about 9 months into my transition . (cant believe I made it this far!)
Ok, so I had decided that I was going to flat iron my hair throughout the winter because I simply dont have the time with 2 small kids to braid my hair every night, and its too cold to wash every day, every other day, etc.
I have been lucky and blessed that every time I DO wash my hair , my waves and curls pop back up.
I was only flat ironing every 2 weeks but I dont want heat damage.
I have natural friends and family who have 100% transitioned by flat ironing.
I am terrified reading some of the comments I read on different message boards that I will get irreversible heat damage.
So I've come up with a new every 2 week plan....Buns for 2 weeks, Braidouts for 2 weeks, Flat Iron for 2-3 weeks.
But my question is this...does anyone have any tips on how to prevent breakage from the bunning? If so, please share! I am going to experiment with loose buns, messy buns, tight buns, side buns, etc. ANYthing to keep the excess heat out of my hair until weather gets warmer. PLUS, I think if I bun more, I can trap more moisture on the INSIDE of my head. Does that make sense?
thanks in advance!

I used to bun all last year and my hair broke alot, but it was because I was doing it too tight and worried about making my edges stay flat so I used to brush them. (Bad I know lol)
When bunning i'd say make sure its not supertight, make sure the hair is moisturized, don't brush your edges. If you want them to stay down I suggest tying it with a satin/silk scarf to lay them down. Try to leave the bun for a couple of days without taking it down so your not constantly manipulating the hair. Oh and last some ladies put their scrunchies in an oil then tie the hair so its not yanking on the hair.
HTH! Very Happy

I agree with Nessa101 as far as not having it too tight and not brushing. Also I would suggest not always placing your bun on the same spot all the time. The keeping the moisture in does make sense. I know exactly what you're referring to!

I tend to stick to bunning dry hair to keep from pulling my hair too tightly. When I'm done setting my hair, sometime gently loosen it up just in case.

When I first became a natural I didn't know ANYTHING until I stumbled on to CN and it showed as I had a bald spot in the front of my head Sad. The first 3 things I did were 1- put the brush down with a quickness 2-stopped bunning/ponies and 3- moisturized.

For me, the trick to take my bun down at night and put into a loose braid or two.
It relieves any tension on the scalp
