CALLING ALL TWA GRADUATES!! Empty CALLING ALL TWA GRADUATES!!

Post by Tnt38 14th February 2011, 6:28 pm

So I have reached 6 months post bc (9 months post relaxer) and my hair is about 4 to 4.5 inches all around. Is this the "awkward" length phase??? For me it seems to be. My twists are fine, but the twist out is....awkward. Lol, my hair in the back is starting to hang down but my bangs and the rest of my hair still go up. So I always have to wear a hand band or put it in a puff. I'm happy its growing but is there any other styles to try besides the 2 mentioned?? Before I know it I'll have out grown this length but just curious to see and style ideas. Thanks in advance!

I'm at the exact same place as you!!! One thing I've tried is stretching my hair by the banding method (with braids) and then doing mini twists on my hair. The twist outs look so much better but I will admit it is time consuming. Check out my CSJ for pics. I'm trying a roller set tonight. I hope it comes out well!

I think it will be ok once we get past this phase.

Im right there with you!! Ive been wearing fro-hawks to get through this phase..styling my hair in a fro-hawk help hides how weird my sides look lol..my sides are really long and already starting to hang and the top still stick straight up soooo I have this mullet look going on at the moment lol BUT when i do the fro-hawk I can hide them sides

I'm there as well. I've been wearing my hair out everyday with limited styling--not because I can't do it, it's the length and way it grows. I'm so bored with my hair right now. I haven't even tried the frohawk yet. The sides grow out and down and the back is just down--way down. It looks so weird. Thank goodness I can manage it the way it is now.

I booked an appt with my old stylist and gave him a rundown of my products, why I use them, and why his products don't work me. He was awesome because he read the articles I gave him before I went in, plus he used all my products in order to see how they worked for me. He charged me dirt cheap for the style and I loved it. He is more creative than I am right now. It was cool because he stood in front of the mirror with me and made me comb coil/the coil out the looser parts of my hair to match the other parts. He's doing my hair again on Friday.

I think if i wear one more frohawk, my hair will be really mad at me..lol...
That's all i do when going out.
But to go to work and go to the gym, i do some big twists and pin them up and wear a black headband...
I'll try and snap a pic...

Be your on stylist for now, lol. I paid $20, but I know that won't fly with a lot of stylists. You know they charge based on their bills, lol! That's great that you and a few other youngins here are doing all this and attending college. I commend all of you. I barely had time to eat or sleep in college. This natural route is like another class. I was taking notes, researching, and doing "lab" on myself!

Post by SwanLakeLibra 16th February 2011, 6:31 pm

I'm in the same boat. I have been doing a "Hide My Hair/Protective Style Challenge". See this is my 3rd BC in nearly 2 years (4/5/2009 1st BC). However, when I would get to this "ackward" stage, I would BC because I became to frustrated with trying to style my hair.

Well this time, I decided to not cut my hair anymore and let it grow but I had to do something that would prevent me from cutting. So I decided for the Fall/Winter months to wear a wig. Now for me, it killed two birds with one stone. First, it reduced my single strands knots greatly. Second, I could leave my PS (twists/coils) in much longer. Third, I manage to keep the Hand in Fro problems to a minimum during the day, but as soon as I leave work the wig comes off, because she must be touched. My hair is at its healthiest since my 1st BC.

Now do not get me wrong, I miss my hair but I know once the Summer gets here, I am going to let her do her thang. Can't wait for the Afro Day in July because I am going to blow her out. But in the meantime, I must live with this ackward stage. But I am so glad to see so many of you at this stage with me. I know I will get though this now.

I have already "click" the Watch this topic for replies for inspiration. Sorry for the long post just couldn't believe there were so many of us feeling the same way.

Post by belleaenca 16th February 2011, 7:51 pm

I will just get on the "I'm on the same boat" wagon here. I bc'd on my 10 mos post-relaxer so I never quite experienced the TWA; but I still loved the lenght of my afro at that point. I've been doing twists out for the most part with only two wash-n-gos because it's been way too cold in NY to head outside with wet hair.

It's been a month now since I bc'd and the growth has creeped up on me. I woke up monday this week and unravel my twists and they didn't know what the heck they wanted to do. For the most part they were laying down but there were other sticking up in weird places. I looked at my hair in the mirror and said to it "what are you doing? lay down or stick up but you can't go every which way, all willy-nilly missy" LOL Then I shrug my shoulders and let it be...it actually settled quite nicely by end of day...so I've made a conscious decision not to stress about it because it's really out of my hands. I can't make it grow any faster and I have really fine hair so I'm afraid of too much manipulation...

Sorry I didn't add anything new to add here, I just wanted to chime in hehe Smile

Yes, I used to do it religiously with my twa. I would dampen my hair with water, apply oils, use a leave-in, cover with a plastic cap and satin bonnet overnight, and go to sleep. The oil and water steamed my hair under the plastic cap since heat tends to escape from your head. I had really soft hair the next day. Later I begin using water, oil, a little leave-in, then my curl defining cream for this technique and I had ridiculously soft and tamed spirals in the morning. I stopped the baggy method when my hair didn't need the extra moisture. So yes ma'am you can baggy on your twa for moisture.

The difference is that you don't wash it out next day. Just touch up, style, and go. But yeah, there was so much terminology that I didn't get until after I chopped. I never knew that I was transitioning for 5 months, or anything about hair typing/curl pattern, pre-pooing, co-washing, and sooooo much more. I'm glad I didn't know though. I don't recommend not doing proper research, but it I benefitted from not being caught up in all of that. I researched and figured out my own hair needs after reading various blogs, medical articles, and wonderful posts from the ladies here. Now styling is another topic, lol.

Thanks, I'll have to try this sunday. I have some questions about it though 1) Am I supposed toapply the oils to wet or dry hair?
2) In the morning I dont have to wash it out correct?
3) which leave in condtioner have you found to like the best? I like the "DOO GROW" brand but I am open to anyother good ones.

Ok, I'm here too!! I bc'd in August of last year. It took me about 3 months to realize i wasn't doing things right. I was just jumping from here to there. But since then, I've been really paying attention to my hair more and learning. (Yeah us older folks have hard heads too)! I just henna'd the first time with jamila, loosened my curls, and started using qhemet burdock root cream, my hair loves it. I baggy my hair sometimes, but not every night, and Ioil my scalp with castor oil because of a challenge I entered. Guess I better step up my baggy method to keep the moisture sealed in. that was most of my problem those first few months.

Does anyone have a really simple routine they follow that they don't mind passing to others for their daily process? I am trying to make one, but I think I, like others on the boards, need a big sister for that also!!! Smile

Well, most are sying it's making their hair grow. Mine has retained some length. But mostly it's gotten ti=hicker. My hair was always thin even in the relaxed days. Now it's fuller. I've even noticed baby hairs, is that what they are still called, around the front hairline that I didn't notice were missing. I did wear braids a lot too. But I never thought the edges were broken off. But now, I see these hairs coming out of nowhere!!! I started in early December and regularly use it every other day to oil my scalp before bed. Not greasy it absorbs well. My pillow and pliiow case ont he other hand....WHEW. I guess if I was baggying it, they wouldn't be in such bad shape. confused

So do you just grease your scalp with it or do you apply it to you hair like from a spray bottle? I wasnt some growth and a little more thickness. My hair is already thich but I would like just a tad bit more!
