I AM FED UP!

Post by suqiit on 14th February 2011, 12:30 am

I am a very very coily 4A and I have more single strand knots that you can count. Some strands even have 2 or 3 freakin knots on them! Lets not go the "moisture route", because I use more shea butter, coconut oil, olive oil than I can already stand. I am not a natural with dense hair either, so twist outs usually look stringy on me, not really making it a viable option. I transitioned for a year, and cut my hair last July. Since July, I have had to trim 2 inches of hair off from the stupid knots. So basically in 7ish months, I have barely kept half my growth! I'm struggling here! I was texurized before, I was never a straight natural, and I am MISSING MY TEXURIZER RIGHT NOW! I'm at the end of my damn rope ladies! Help me!!!!!!

For me, the only way I can reduce SSK (single strand knots) is not do constant wash-n-gos. Twist or braid outs and protective styling (buns) is the only thing that prevents (or reduces) it for me.

Is your hair long enough to bun? Maybe you can do a twist out and bun it dry to give it more body but protect it?

I agree with CarlaAR. Protective styling may be the best solution. When your ends are exposed they tend to rub up against or clothes or curl around itself causing the knots. It's annoying. I've experienced them, too. Try keeping your hair twisted in pinups or keep your ends from being exposed by bunning, if possible.

It's not long enough for bunning yet. I just found out 2 weeks ago I can do a *small* pony tail. I'm thinking about getting genie braids to give myself a break.

I can almost feel your frustration through the computer. If your problem with SSKs is this overwhelming, do you think the issue may be damaged cuticle or porosity issue. Does your hair seem to lose moisture quickly or does your hair dry super fast after you wash it or seem to have an unquenchable thirst?

A couple of easy things you can do that are not style related are ACV rinse (correct ph issues and smooth cuticle) and protein treatment (fill in holes if there is damage to the cuticle), if you are not protein sensitive and see if the problem improves. Also, you could look into something like AOWC. It is a smoothing conditioner and it is excellent. You received some good recommendations, so this is all I could think of.

I agree that protective styling may help you reduce your SSK's. You mentioned that you use shea butter, coconut oil and olive oil as moisturizers, but do you use any type of creamy water based product as a leave-in or moisturizer? Coconut Oil is known to penetrate the hair strand but maybe your hair needs a water based moisturizer instead of just oils.

Maybe do a twist or braid out, then gather it back in a pony (not tight) and get an afro-kinky ponytail to "fill out" your pony until your own hair catches up?

I don't remember having the SSK issue, but I do remember being in that in-between stage....long enough to pull it back in a pony but having that lil 2" protrusion that didn't look right. I went to the beauty supply and got one of those afro-kinky ponytails for $9.99 and "knapped" it up by fluffing it out with my fingers. Cut and shape it to a natural length. Then I would draw my hair back and protect my pony end by pinning it under. Then put the kinky pony on and some sort of hair scrunchie to border it and make it look more natural.
