How hard is your water? See the map in the link below. What can you do about it? 1) Purchase distilled water 2) Boil water and let it cool before using (partially effective) 3) Purchase a shower head filter 4) Install a whole house water softner. I purchased a shower head filter and my hair and skin thanked me!

I don't have a problem with tap water on my hair or skin, but I don't drink it. I had a filter installed on the kitchen sink faucet and there's one on the fridge.

One of my curly friends texted me that the map posted above is quite outdated (1975). I will find a current one and update later. Sorry for the goof up.

You still brought up an important point. I think everyone should be aware of their water quality regulations and standards.

I dont even need to take a test because my water is hard because i live in a limestone area, but i didnt know it could contribute to the dryness of your hair.*u learn something new everyday*

I don't know what our water quality level is here but I do know that when I was spritzing my hair with water, it was still dry and my scalp was itching like crazy. I've switched to using only aloe vera juice for my spritz and wash my hair at the kitchen sink in which we have a filter on it. No more itchy scalp!

Aj, if you get tired of aloe or if you want to cut corners, try distilled water. I buy distilled water for my hair needs except washing/rinsing.

Here is an update on this subject and Ida has a map that provides a "guide" to water hardness across the U.S. Not sure of the date, but the second link is a government source from 2005.

Great thread.
Here is a current report of water hardness across the US: http://www.qualitywatertreatment.com/city_water_guide.htm
You can find your drinking water quality state-by-state via the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): http://water.epa.gov/drink/local/index.cfm
Your state should readily have this information available for you to view on an annual basis.

FYI, on Tuesday Feb. 15 Dr. Oz' show tackles the safety of the water quality in the US and asks the question, "Is your water causing cancer?" He will also be addressing some facts about our beloved bottled water. Interesting and timely if anyone is interested.

I actually wrote a paper on bottled water a while back. Did you know that the reins are actually tighter on tap water than bottled water? Makes you think...
