Navy Basic Training and natural curls Empty Navy Basic Training and natural curls

Post by Nking05 2nd February 2011, 4:26 pm

I was wondering if there were any females who have recently (within the past 2 years) gone through Navy basic training. What did you do with your hair and how did you maintain it in a functional way while following the regulations? I ship out May 18, and was looking for any advice. I've come to the point where I may just do a BC and call it a day- seeing that this is a new path for me, I was thinking of just starting everything anew. Thanks!

In case you haven't seen this, there is a new thread on NC.com about it. A lot of curlies are shipping out soon too!

When I was in Navy basic (January 1986) I rocked a twa(I didn't know that's what it was back then)..actually, it was shorter than that, kinda in between a low caesar and a twa. I was wearing my hair like that anyway so it was no biggie for me. I don't even think we could have gel in basic, although now you probably can. I remember they let you go to the Exchange a couple of times for supplies) After basic, I was stationed in the Philippines, and when I left 2 years later, my hair was past my shoulders (it was probably due to the very high heat/humidity lol)

I was in the navy years ago. First, thank you for joining. You are in for a life changing experience.
Okay back to hair. When I went (don't you hate to hear that from older people? hehe) into bootcamp, braids were not allowed so I cut my hair to shoulder length from BSL. In boot camp, even that was not enough, so a woman in my company cut everybody's hair to ear length. She came from a small town and had only seen black people on tv or from a distance. You can imagine how we looked, but at least we didn't have to pay for it. lol. With my cover and thick black bc glasses on a safety elastic. I looked like bozo the clown. I got another girl to cut my hair even shorter. My first big chop, cause it was faded it on the sides and about 2 inches on top. Mother had a fit when she came down for graduation. affraid

Regs have changed though and braided styles are possible within regs. Navy Grooming Standards If we'd had braided styles I would have done two side braids and kept my hair long.

I suggest see if you can borrow headwear from the recruiter and test it out with some braided styles. You will have 5 NAVY MINUTES TO do the three S's in the morning. Styling your hair is not one of them. lol! Shave and shower are two of them and you can imagine what the other is.

Your A and B drawers are smaller than a file cabinet. Your hair regimen will consist of a true wash and go. You might a minute to throw in some conditioner but IDK. I shaved my legs on sundays, so I would have more time in the week for the other S's. Shocked Very Happy

You just will not have the time or energy to do involved styles in bootcamp.

When I was shopping for a wig on hairsisters.com, several of the conservative bob style wigs had reviews from women in the service, some with pictures or videos showing the wigs underneath certain hats. I have no personal knowledge of the military, but I thought it was worth mentioning. Thank you for your service and good luck!

Thanks ladies for the feedback....

@CarlaAR- after I posted this question, I did another search and found that posting @NC. That has answered all my questions, but thank you too for suggesting that post :-)

@Madeaj- thanks for that link to Navy Regs, and for your feedback. I wasn't going to bring anything with me to basic, but at least now I know the actual rules.

Overall, my plan is to do cornrows. They're within the regs, and can be maintained for the 9 weeks, by redoing them every Sunday...
Thanks for the info again!
