Puffy ends? Empty Puffy ends?

Post by omgitsaj 8th February 2011, 1:27 am

I BC'ed in october and haven't had scissors to my hair since then. I haven't seen spilt ends, broken hairs or SSK but my ends are very puffy.

What could this be a sign of? Thanks in advance!

Yeah, me too. Mad When I straighten my hair, the latter part of my hair will be straight, and then the ends will be kind of puffy, and won't straighten like the rest of the hair. What's going on? Sad

I thought it was just damaged hair. thats gunna need to be trimmed. I guess you can try a protein and dc on it and keep it oiled and kept inside. like doing a bantu knot of something. just wearing them for 24 hours makes a difference.

If its damaged hair wouldn't it be breaking off?? I haven't tried protein because my hair is very prone to dryness and I'm worried. I also don't want to trim if not necessary because growth is a goal.

I hope all of us find a solution though:)

This may sound like a silly answer, but try a Denman or a Tangle Teezer...they always work with smothing my ends...

I don't believe damaged hair always breaks off. Well I had puffy ends at one point, and all i did was after washing, make sure they got moisturized and kept in. do that for 24 hours and you will have soft slick ends. well it worked for me. They just might be dry, and not necessarily damaged. but isnt dry hair, damaged hair?

@Indigo I tried using a tangle teezer and a knock off denman but I think my hair is a little too short for them to perform properly.

@meepmeep I don't know if dry hair is always damaged hair, but then again I'm still learning. I've been keeping my hair twisted and moisturized and oiled, but no difference yet. Maybe it is a protein problem..

Pre poo with conditioner, olive oil, vitamin e oil and honey. I shampoo with Giovanni SAS, DC with olive oil cholesterol mixed with olive oil and honey, knot today as a leave in, I twist with eco custard, moisturize with Qhemet's BRBC and seal with vatika oil.

Maybe I'm using too much products?

you seal after you twist?

Everything seems fine, but maybe there is something your hair isn't liking? How long has this been going on? and have u added any new products since then, or subtracted anything?

My ends have been like this for a while, but I've only been doing this for like 2 weeks and i just added the BRBC to it. I love how it make my hair feel, its just my ends that are killing me haha.

I'm going to keep this up for about 2-3 more weeks and then evaluate my hair because I think its too soon to tell.

Well I just hope u at least try keeping them in. if its only for over night. its a hard process of tucking hair that i cant seem to explain. but ill try:

1. Make a part of abt 2x1 inches. Just a nice size rectangle. It can be bigger depending on the hair length.

2. Split the hair in half. Take one half and create a 2 strand twist. Also do that with the other so you have 2 twists

3. Twist the 2 twist together and then twist the whole twist like creating a bantu knot and then tuck it underneath.

(You created a pocket when you twisted both twists to create a big twist. And the bantu knot part is only so the hair fits in the space better and it keeps all ur ends in)

Not a hairstlye to wear out the house..lol...they look like little weird things on ur hair, but they are kinda flat.

I hope u can understand my directions. IDK if anyone else does it, but that use to keep my permed end feeling like the rest of my hair.

Goodluck! *sigh*

Okay, how about finger coils? They help smooth the ends...
What is your night time routine like? Do you cover your hair with satin and do you sleep on your back??? I really don't know...just trying to help brainstorm...

I had puffy ends at the beginning of my hair journey and it turned out to be *scab hair. It took about 6 months to grow out.

(*Scab hair – Hair that is directly underneath the scalp that has been affected by the hash chemicals(i.e. relaxers, texturizers). Even though the hair is new growth it isn’t “trained” to behave in it’s natural state. The hair can be straight-wiry, very dry, hard, and brittle. It usually takes somewhere around 6 months to a year to completely grow it out. – Derived from Motowngirl.com.)

A while back kimmay on YouTube made a statement that puffy ends means that the hair cuticle is lifted. After hearing this i began to pay close attention to my puffy ends. I dunk the ends of my hair in cold water, and apple cider vinegar in an attempt to closed the cuticles. I still had the puffy ends, but what i realized about my hair is that within 1 day the puffy ends are gone. I don't know if this is the same with anyone else, but i only get puffy ends on wash day.

@Meepmeep, thanks i will have to try that!

@Indigo, I always wear a satin cap or scarf, but I am a very wild sleeper so I may fall asleep on my side or stomach but wake up in a totally different position. I've never tried finger coils, just because I don't really like the way they look, but all winter I've been wearing hats with my satin cap underneath to keep my ends protected

@Cherry, how can I know for sure its scab hair? Do I just have to wait for it to grow out to see?

@Cagebird, Hmm I will have to try finishing my wash with cold water and see.

Great tips here ladies!!! I wondered the same thing. I really think that it is a combination of dry hair and scab hair as someone mentione above. The ends are the oldest part of our hair and usually needs MOST TLC...

I agree with Cagebird..learned this from Kimmaytube:

There may be a pH issue so when you go to seal though ends, make sure you are using something that is slightly acidic.

the mix i use for my hair has a pH of 4.5 and perfectly closes the cuticle and my ends will stay smooth all week.

Whatever you are using to seal your ends, continue to use that but mix it with a little aloe vera juice and you'll see a huge difference when it dries.

Im not sure if scab hair reacts differently for different people but with my hair after i bc-ed, my hair grew out straight, then wavy, then crinkly, then my natural curl pattern. So you could try waiting for your hair to grow out to see if you can see a difference in your curl pattern. Also, when my hair was wet, if i twirled it around my finger, my natural hair would curl but the scab hair wouldnt. scratch That might be an indicator. But since scab hair is still chemically altered, to get rid of it you have to trim it off. So I would try looking into the advice the other ladies are giving to see if its something else first. HIH
