Flat ironing PLEASE HELP Empty Flat ironing PLEASE HELP

Post by Thinice 26th January 2011, 10:12 pm

Please offer your advice for tips and techniques for a successful flat iron.

I flat ironed my 4b hair. This was the first time i had direct heat on my hair in a year.
It was a major failure---poofy, big hair.
I wanted sleek hair.

Please help!

I have found that the key to getting sleek straight flat ironed hair is the blow drying. The drier and straighter I get my hair while I blow dry my hair, the flatter hair I get. And it lasts longer. HTH!

Yea I'm going to have to agree with the blow drying part. However this is what I do. I section my hair in four part and I band each section so the hair near my scalp is straight and i let the rest air dry either twisted, or braided. Then when its a little more than half way dry you can blow dry it so you arent using as MUCH heat on your hair. You are using it to loosen the curl and not so much trying to dry your whole head as well. Plus it eliminates the extra passes down the hair with the flat iron. Also if you have a cool setting you can dry doing that and once it is dry use heat with your blow dryer to get the hair straight.

True but I use 2 separate heat protectants. One for each step... I've had no problem with reversion.

I find that properly moisturizing prior to flat ironing also contributes in sleek looking hair.

Check out Wwestndnbeautyy on Youtube. She straightens her hair frequently. She has a blog too.

For blow drying I use KeraCare Silken Seal (quarter size drop)
For Flat Ironing I use Vitale EZ Press (just enough to cover your finger tips)

Both are on the spendy size BUT a little of both get the job done. I purchased both over a year ago and both are over halfway full.

@ Mandi What type of leave in do you use? I use Kimmaytube's recipe but I think it may be a little to heavy for a straight look> I was thinking about tweekin it instead of the heavy castor oil use grapeseed which can be used as a heat protectant ( i think)

I've never used a leave in when I flat ironed. I like to use the least amount of product as possible to prevent build up. That's just me though...

Thank you for the suggestions. Here is an update. I watched Westndnbeauty video and read her entries about flat ironing. I even moisturized following her instructions. Sunday I blow dried with a comb attachment and heat protectant. I flat ironed my hair. It was nice, I just need to learn how to sleep cute again cuz it didn't last.

It went from this [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
