What is the thickness of your hair strands and the density of the follicles on your head? (Select the strand thickness that represents the majority of your hair strands)
Strand Thickness & Hair Density
I have been thinking about strand thickness for a while so this recent article (http://www.curlynikki.com/2011/01/so-fine-natural-hair.html#comments) is right on time. I’m curious to know the fall out/distribution among us. Often times during the description of hair strands, fine and medium is used to describe European hair and coarse is used to describe Asian/Native American hair. My hypothesis is that its going to be a somewhat even distribution.
I myself have all three strands on my head but most of my strands are medium. So, I'm a Medium/Medium.
In my opinion, I think knowing your strand thickness and hair density is much more beneficial than knowing your hair type. What are some things you have noticed about your hair due to the thickness of your strands and its density?
Use the article as a reference to determine your thickness and density: http://www.curlynikki.com/2011/01/so-fine-natural-hair.html#comments

Re: Strand Thickness & Hair Density
My medium, dense hair loves cream products. The creamier the better. If the product is too thick, my hair is weighed down. If it's too liquidy, my hair poofs and looks dry and brittle.
My hair also does not do to well with most shea based products (shea butter as one of the first five ingredients). My hair loves aloe vera based products. Some of my favorite product lines are Curl Junkie, Darcy's Botanical and Koils by Nature.
I prefer to deal with my hair when it is damp. When wet, products do not seem to absorb as well. When dry, I seem to overdo it.
I totally agree with you in reference to how to care for your hair is not based on curl type but other factors. Knowing your curls' density and texture (fine, medium, coarse) is more beneficial than the circumference or lack their of.

Re: Strand Thickness & Hair Density
My strands are very dense, thick and coarse. My hair loves thick, creamy and moisturizing products. I use protein very seldomly and I try to make sure that its on the lower part of the ingredient list of the products I use since it makes my hair hard if I use it to frequently.
I prefer to style my hair while damp to make sure the products absorb and its easier to style.

Re: Strand Thickness & Hair Density
My fine, thin hair cannot take too much product without looking flat. I have to use very light products to give the illusion of thickness. I usually style wet and coconut oil seems to be the winning sealant. By the 3rd day, my hair is big an full looking.

My hair is medium (thickness) and thin (density).
I find I need thick, creamy, moisturizing products...watery products do nothing for me. I LOVE shea butter...it keeps my hair soft and shiny, with minimal frizz (I found out when I stopped using it! LOL)

I realize that this is the same with me! My hair loves aloe vera products and doesn't seem to react as well to shea butter based products. I have fine to medium strands and have dense hair and I definitely prefer to style damp. I actually only dry style if I'm using mousse for quick curls or twist/braidouts
Re: Strand Thickness & Hair Density
i *think* my hair has fine strands, but has medium density.
i've just started using avj, but i think my hair loves it. as long as i moisturize my hair while it's wet, use a creamy-ish thick leave in (i'm loving giovanni direct leave-in) and seal with an oil (jojoba, vatika, castor), my hair feels really soft. i've also noticed that even though my hair hasn't retained much length, my hair has grown SOSOSO much in volume since i've been taking care of it.
9th grade (twist out):

Summer after 11th grade (braid out, but you get the idea):

Re: Strand Thickness & Hair Density
I have fine (strands) and medium (density) around the perimeter of my head and medium (strands) and thick (density) in the crown area.
My hair prefers thick and creamy products. My hair loves butters and products work best on damp hair. If I apply water or moisture (humidity) causes my hair to poof almost instantly.
Because of my combo hair, I absolutely CAN NOT do wash n gos. My hair gets so tangled.

Re: Strand Thickness & Hair Density
*checking my pubes right now* lol
I THINK I have medium strands with thick density.
But my hair is bipolar, so I have pretty much every hair texture, strand thickness and density on my head.
The back is 4a thick strands/medium density, the sides are 3b medium/medium, the top is wavy fine strands/thick density, the front is 3c medium/thick, and there are two patches on both sides of my temples that are 4b coily fine, BROWN strands. Its really bizarre.
Because of the density it takes forever to comb. The wavy top part of my hair takes the longest to comb because it is the most dense and prone to breakage.

Re: Strand Thickness & Hair Density
Most of my strands are fine and Medium and I have a little coarse in there. My hair is thick thick.
It loves protein, and not a lot of product. It loves being sprayed with condiitioner and water, and it loves to be cowashed every 2 days. It loves shea butter, and hates tea tree oil. Its better for my protective styles to be done on original damp hair. not hair that was dry with spraying water. lol
My hair doesnt seal well Idk y, but then again, I dont really kno from comparsion? It doesnt really get dry i dont think lol.

Re: Strand Thickness & Hair Density
I'm fine stranded all over & medium density with maybe a patch of thicker density near the crown. The thinnest finest strands I have are near my temples just above my ears.. they tend to straigten out with the slightest tug.
My hair loves protein (silk amino acids are my new faves), protein conditioners & moisturizing conditioners, and light liquid leave ins. I like shea butter but can only use it sparingly on my hair otherwise it feels coated. These days I'm really liking apricot kernel oil as well. Basically the lighter a product is, the better it is for my hair.
Hair hates aloe, glycerin, and pretty much any commercial gel (they make my hair break), but flax seed gel is light enough to use.

Re: Strand Thickness & Hair Density
My hair is weird, it has always been fine, but in it's natural state, it feels medium density, when it is straight, it's paper thin.
My hair likes a nice balance between protein & moisture, and loves creamy products.
My favorite cowashing conditioner is Suave Shea & Almond, it gives my hair so much slip. It loves oils, aloe, shea, etc. I'm very prone to single strand knots too.
