4b Detangling
Okay Natural Ladies of CN:
First of let me say hello to everyone. Hope the New Year is starting of swell for you ladies! If you've made a resolution I hope you have not fallen off the band wagon. If you have well then SHAKE IT OFF AND STEP UP! (my motto for this year).
My 4b Naturalistas:
Can someone please recommend an exceptional detangling conditioner or leave-in? I am trying this and trying that. I cannot seem to find a product with enough slip to help detangle my hair without losing what I consider to be a lot of hair. Also, how much is too much hair to be losing? I'm just afraid that I am ripping out my hair during the detangling process and it is becoming so discouraging. I love my natural hair but I want to see it flourish. I have found moisturizing conditioners but they are not good detanglers. After the detangling process I'm about ready to cry!
Your help is much appreciated

Hey Born2BeMe,
First of all I definitely understand where you are coming from. Detangling my hair can really be a disaster and I still haven't found a detangling conditioner that I am 100% in love with. The only one that comes close for this purpose is Aussie 3 Minute Miracle.
I'd like to know what method of detangling you use. Also, what are you using to detangle? Wide tooth comb or denman brush for example? And how often do you do this? Sometimes if I wait too long in between detangling sessions, my hair makes sure to let me know how unhappy it is with me for doing so.
I've tried a bunch of different methods but I found that I lose less hair when I finger detangle first with some conditioner on damp hair, and then use a wide-tooth comb in the shower under the stream of water when my hair is saturated with conditioner. My Denman brush worked great when I was transitioning, but now it snatches out way too much hair.

I like using Giovanni Smooth As Silk and Aussie Moist to detangle. These are the only conditioners I have found that has the best slip for 4 family hair.

It a twist out on dry hair using BeeMine Luscious Balance Moisturizer and Curly Butter. The product caused it to shrink a little bit.

Re: 4b Detangling
hey chica! i have 4a/b (fine texture/densly packed/prone to breakage) hair and i have found that my hair prefers to be finger detangled dry using oils. i used to detangle wet w/condish and realized that i was loosing much too much hair, even with a condish that yielded great slip. my hair was breaking b/c when it's wet, it stretches more, the condish makes it soft, then when manipulated, it just breaks easily. so, i resorted to dry detangling at the sink prior to poo'ing, which gave much better results. i went from loosing near 'tennis ball' size amount of hair, down to 'ping pong' size or less. if you decide to try the dry/oil method, you can use whatever oil you have on hand, doesn't have to be a particular kind.
-section hair into 8 sections (or more)
-oil hands down w/oil (quarter-size amount)
-smooth hands down the hair to remove shed hairs
-gently finger detangle to remove tanlges/knots
-once tangles/knots removed, smooth hands down the hair once more
-twist section and move on to next ... works like a charm

Re: 4b Detangling
I recommend Aussie Moist conditioner or my fav Suave Professionals Almond & Shea Butter conditioner. Very cost-friendly products that can be purchased in local stores that definitely get the job done! I also recommend that you start with products that aren't too expensive or if it is costly, see if they offer a sample size. Purchasing this way helps not hurt the pockets so much just in case your hair does not respond well to the product. Another great product that is like a leave-in detangler is Taliah Waajid Protective Mist Bodifier.
Tip: When using a conditioner to detangle, make sure your hair is soaking wet with water and conditioner. Not to where it is dripping everywhere (OK if in shower) but to the point that it is on the verge of it. I add two nice palm fulls of conditioner to wet hair and massage through. I then add small amounts of water to get it to a foamy consistency before detangling. You can comb through with ease like a warm knife through hardened butter.

Re: 4b Detangling
Oooh, I'll have to keep an eye on this thread as I haven't figured the answer out yet. Going to try QB detangling ghee for the first time tonight so hopefully that'll be the answer.
Hey B2BM, what did you do to your hair in your avatar? It doesn't look like what I'd expect 4B hair to look like. I get so confused about typing sometimes!

yay! when you do, please report back. also, i'd like to add that i use as much oil that's needed for the best 'slip'. if a quarter size isn't enough, i add more. and i don't use a comb at any time .... fingers only. i hope it works for you Lynnie

Re: 4b Detangling
Thanks Everyone!
@jo this was my hair in a transition state...it was my staple flex rod set. So the ends were relaxed.
@mizcreativelyme...it's funny you recommend dry detangling with because I used to do that with a moisturizer or leave in until I started reading that detangling with condish on wet hair was better. I actually lose about ping pong ball amounts of hair but it just sounds like I'm tearing it out. I detangle in about 8 sections due to thickness, sometimes more. I hate detangling combs because they leave behind a lot of hair and I find all of the left behind hair coming out when I'm twisting.
I just tried oyin's hair dew moisturizer/leave in and it is unbelievably amazing! I'm gonna try the aussie moist because I do need a good conditioner.

Re: 4b Detangling
I also use Giovanni Smooth as Silk, I think it has ultimate slip. I like knot today for a lighter leave in and Giovanni direct leave in for a heavier leave in. Both of those have good slippage for me. I buy Suave Almond and Shea at the regular grocery store when I haven't gotten to Whole Foods for Giovanni. For me, oil doesn't help detangling, only these water based products. Hope you find something you like!

Re: 4b Detangling
idk i don't use a "leave-in" and sometimes it's best to detangle ur hair whenever ur in the shower and applying the conditioner (regular one) and combing it through w/ ur big tooth shower comb don't know what technique u use, but this works for me

Also the tangle teezer works to help detangle. Wet or dry. I just discovered it and so did a few others. It's really great. Youtube it.
