My first try at yarn braids!
So after seeing this post http://tiashauntee.blogspot.com/2010/12/yarn-braids-yes.html on Tiashauntee's blog I knew I just had to give these a try. I've been wanting to try them for a while, but I could never get the hang of braiding with extra hair (or yarn) added. I looked at some of the tutorials that she linked to her blog, gave myself a "you can do this" talk, then went to Wal-Mart and bought some of the Red Heart yarn.
My daughter wanted colored yarn, but I was not having that. I wanted to stick with black so we were able to compromise on the "Black Fleck" color. It has little flecks of color throughout it, but not so much that it looks distracting. After seeing how hers came out I would love this color for myself! It looks fun and interesting...to me.
We were in no rush to finish them since she didn't have to go to school for a few more days so I started them Wednesday around 3p.m. and finished Friday night at around 10p.m. We took huge breaks in between but if I had to guess, I'd say that it took about 7 hours total. Considering this was my first time I don't think that's too bad.
I think this will be a great protective style that will enable us both to take a break from styling. I will wash her scalp once a week and spray with a braid spray once a day or as needed. She really does love them and for braids that cost less than $3, so do I! lol

This was her first style...I couldn't really think of anything else, but I'm sure that YT has some cool styling videos.

Re: My first try at yarn braids!
Oh those look really good. She is going to be the envy of every little girl in school. I bet you are going to get a few requests by the end of the school week. Very pretty and I bet much better than you could get at a braiding place. Love the little specks of color. Her hair will match everything.

You did a GOOD job!!! I think the specks of color was a great compromise!! It's really cute!!! I agree with madeaj....her braids are gonna be a big hit amongst her friends/classmates!!
So when you do them on yourself, are getting the specks of color too?

Thanks Madeaj! I hope I do get some requests. I need the practice plus a little extra cash wouldn't hurt

Thanks Lynnie! I actually do like the specks of color...it looks very AfroJamaican to me. I know that's not a word, but that's the best way I can describe it LOL.

I'm shooting for 4 weeks. I'll probably redo her edges and nape in a couple weeks though.
Re: My first try at yarn braids!
Your daughter's hair looks great I love the fact that you did not let her have the color but chose a compromise for her It looks fantastic Great job

@Latoya28 As far styling ideas beadsbraidsbeyond.blogspot.com has some great styling ideas for little girls. None of them feature yarn braids but some (styles) are done on box braids which I'm assuming you could replicate on her yarn braids. All of the styles are very cute!

Re: My first try at yarn braids!
You coming to the UK any time soon? Want to do yarn braids for me?
Seriously though, they look really good! Although, I must say I've never seen them look bad, but then again, I expect the people who mess them up don't go ahead and post videos/pics of their results for the public!
I really want to try these as an alternative to my regular braids, but I've never braided with attachments before and my braids on my own hair last about 4 weeks anyway. Doesn't seem worth the extra effort right now. Definitely something I'll try in the not so distant future though.

I think that you did a great job. The color turned out great too. It is fun without making her look too mature.
