New Years Superstitions

Post by brownsuga83 on 30th December 2010, 2:17 pm

Now to me they're quite silly! My mom's is that you have to wash all dirty laundry before New Years Day and if you was on New Years day you will wash someone out of the family. We got into a serious debate about it this morning cause I told her it was silly! Rolling Eyes

Here are some others I've heard:

A man has to be the first person to walk into the house on New Years. I think this is for good luck.

You have to cook greens for money, I think black eye peas for good luck.

I can't think of any others what about you? What are yours or some others you've heard?

I'm not superstitious.
Here's the only other one I have heard:
Whatever you are doing when the New Year begins is what you will be doing all year (or something like that).

I've heard;
Have money in the bank and bills paid at the start of the New Year to ensure prosperity.
Also, hold a handlful of grapes for good luck.

BTW my Mom says that same thing about a clean house and clean clothes. She also says you are not supposed to let the the New Year catch you with the Christmas decorations up from the year before. Suspect

I do not subscribe to these superstitions. But, I will accept a hand full of grapes and eat greens and/ or black eyed peas if offered. Wink

Happy New Year Curlies! woot!

lol! @ will accept a hand full of grapes and eat greens or black eyed peas if offered. I definitely feel you on that. I've never heard about the hand full of grapes for good luck. I have heard about taking Christmas decorations down though. Smh

The ones that I heard are:
If you wash on New Year's Eve, you will wash someone out of the family and if you wash on New Year's Day, you will wash someone into the family.

On New Year's Day, eat collards for more "green backs", dollar bills, and eat black eye peas for more coins.

I think of these superstitions as just another interesting aspect of our history and culture. However, I will be eating some collards and black eye peas, just in case!

A lot of the people that I know who subscribe to the special New Year's meal superstition are broke and always have been! Guess those collards and black eyed peas aren't doing their job.
