Finally!
hey curly girls, Shakirah here. figured i'd start my journey down Curl St. i'm absolutely loving this site and all the sisters on here that i've 'met' so far. thanks in advance for your interest in my story.
i'm gonna make my first intro quick since i have minimal time before Mr. Biggums (my 5 month old son) wakes up from his nap
i've been natural (no dye no relaxer no texturizer) for about five yrs now. as a child, i was natural (braids and press n curls) til i was about 11, was introduced to kiddy creamy crack, graduated to regular creamy crack somewhere btwn middle school and high school, and used them periodically (about 4 or 5 times a yr) until my senior yr in college. i decided to take my hair boy-short (my bf at the time didn't like the idea at all but that's a story for another day lol). i loved the new look but was still a little self-conscious about the texture so here came creamy crack lite (texturizer). i did that for about 9 months then FINALLY decided to take a firm stance of NO TO CHEMICALS.
i wore a mini fro for a few months then, when me and the man the would later become my husband, got really hot n heavy, i started my locs. fast forward about 4 and 1/2 yrs and with new baby came a desire for a new look for the new mommy, so i did the big loc chop! and TADAAA!! here you have me now.
...i know, the cliffnotes version of this story womps, i promise i'll be a much better storyteller as the days go on...
a lil about me:
Philly born and raised
Kutztown University grad with a BA in Sociology
part time photographer
spoken word artist
currently working 24/7 as a proud stay-at-home mom
thanks for letting me stroll thru Curl St. i welcome questions, comments, critiques and compliments lol.
Love!

Re: Finally!
throwback story #1:
Summer 2004, i'm at church with my boyfriend and his family. we wanted to continue conversations from the car without disturbing the rest of the congregation, so we began passing notes back and forth on the service program (soooo wrong, i know lol). the conversation goes back to my desire to cut my hair. he was strongly opposed to the idea. among bantering back and forth without giving me, what i considered to be a valid reason for not cutting my hair, i wrote, "what's the big deal, it's just hair." his response was, "if you cut your hair, it will turn you ugly."
wow.
i remember asking after that if my hair was the only reason he was attracted to me, shortly thereafter i was soooo DONE with the conversation.
a few weeks later, once the semester started i did end up ultimately cutting it ALL off after somehow gaining his "approval" but also to the dismay of all the guys at the barber shop. and of course, he actually liked it.
4 weeks later we broke up.
(maybe it was the lack of hair, maybe it was because my hair cut was more flyy than his lol. no, i'm sure it was a whole host of other things that was wrong with our relationship)
just sharing a hair memory with you guys...

PJ review: kinky curly
Ok, I tried the kinky curly come clean, knot today, and curling custard.
The verdict: eh.
I found that the come clean is pretty good.probably one of the best non sulfate shampoos I've tried.
Knot today was a pretty good detangler, considering i don't have too many problems detangling in general since I started henna treatments. I like it as a leave in so far. Haven't tried it as a rinse out yet.
The custard...uhhh. Let's see...
Pros: curl definition, shine.
Cons: take too daggone long to dry!!! Kinda sticky.
This stuff definitely killed my HIH disease, I didn't like the way it felt on my fingers too much, maybe that's a good thing?my hair is super thick. Once it dried it looked good...until I slept on it. Then it was just okay. I pulled it back into a puff. better than my normal wng puff but i don't think I'll try the custard again until my hair is a little longer. I am worried it may take on a jheri curl look tho.
