Henna on 4a/4b hair
Greetings and Salutations, ladies. Recently, I have been looking into using henna on my hair. I am interested in its curl loosening, strengthening, thickening, and conditioning effects. I was just wondering if any 4a/4b hair types could share their experience, mixtures, and pictures. I want to make sure that I am making the right decision.

Re: Henna on 4a/4b hair
I don't have any pictures, but I have mostly 3c/4a/4b (mostly 4a) hair and I did my first henna right before Easter.
1. I do think it temporarily loosened my curls.. the 2nd or 3rd time I really conditioned my hair the coils seemed to hang a lot more than they usually do-- I have never been tempted to do a wash and go, but I might have done it if it hadn't been so cold! Of course, nothing lasts forever, so for results like that that last you would have to do it more often (maybe every 3 weeks or so).
2. I can't tell if it made my hair physically thicker or stronger. From what I've read it kind of acts like a protein treatment and in that case, I'm sure my hair has become stronger from its use. These effects may come after more than one usage.
One thing I'll tell you (not hair related) that I learned from the experience is about the color-- after rinsing my hair and co-washing a few times (like 3), I could still see the color being rinsed out! If you can, try to wear gloves while styling. styling my hair made my hands a faint orange ( i don't think anyone noticed it besides me) which I think faded away, but it also kind of dyed my nails as well and that did NOT fade (hence, I will be painting my nails for a WHILE). Next time I henna I will make sure I paint my nails before then, and see if it makes a difference.
IMO, it really doesn't hurt to try henna, I think the only things you have to consider are if you plan to chemically color your hair anytime soon, and if you're using 100 Body Art Quality Henna.

Re: Henna on 4a/4b hair
Oh, btw, my mix was about 1/2 a lemon, water, honey, and Henna. Next time I do this I will be trying Curly Nikki's method and use green tea. My hair felt very dry afterwards, and I'm sure the lemon juice did not help matters. Others say that coconut milk has worked for them, and they have not experienced a lot of dryness.
I think it also matters if you're protein sensitive. I have come to believe that my hair doesn't like protein too much (which is the opposite of what fine hair is supposed to like ..goes to show, all hair is different!), so I'm not sure if I will try the coconut milk method in the future. I'll try the tea first.

Re: Henna on 4a/4b hair
Hi. I have a mixture of 4a/b/c (if there is a c) and I've hennaed a few times. I haven't noticed any curl loosening but my hair is definately stronger and healthier. The first time I did a henna treatment I mixed with ACV and I didn't like that at all. Hair was dry and hard. Since then I've been mixing it with green tea and I love the results! When I henna again I'm going to mix with coconut milk since so many people seem to like that mixture. Sorry, I don't have any pictures.

I have a question... I'm mostly 4a with some 2a/3a situations in front (which drive me nuts since it doesnt curl like the rest [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] ugh). Anywho, I am interested in the conditioning benefit of henna and can't wait to try it BUT, I colored my hair a little over a month ago and have read some horror stories about hennaing color treated hair. Anyone have any experience with this?

Re: Henna on 4a/4b hair
I have highlights in my hair (I got them in January) and I hennaed my hair right before Easter. I haven't experienced any problems whatsoever-- I think people run into problems when they don't use 100% PURE, BAQ henna... a lot of the stuff sold in regular beauty stores have metal compounds and salts that react with the chemical color and can wreak havoc on your hair (it can turn it green or even dissolve it!!). If you decide to henna, make sure to get it from a reputable source, and that it is body art quality.

Re: Henna on 4a/4b hair
Henna on dark hair is like using a crayon on black construction paper. You can't really see it in in most light, but in bright/sun light it will have a reddish tint/reflection. So no worries, Henna won't lighten your hair color

like curlydee said the henna will not affect the hightlight in your hair, if anything it will maje the color pop more unless it was a blong light, but it will probably change the previous color if it wasnt red, it will change it to maybe brown or cholate red or cherry red or something. give it a try.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Cassia treament results
Here are my cassia treatment results from Sunday. Yesterday, I did notice that some of my hair (my hair is a dark brown some people think it's black) had a red tint. Next time, I will add amla so that the color does not change.
I just finished my first cassia application. I decided not to henna because I did not have any indigo or amla I don't want to change the color of my hair.
Here is my method:
1) Washed hair and let air dry
2) Mix 100g of cassia with warm water to a consistency of yogurt
3) Applied all of the mixture to my hair (If using water, you must apply cassia within 20 minutes)
4) Wrapped hair in saran wrap
5) Walked around for 30 minutes followed by 30 minutes under heat cap
5) Rinsed and co-washed
6) DC treatment under steamer for an hour
7) Final step Qhemet karkady mist, AOHC & OHHB
Results: After I rinsed the cassia out, I immediately saw looser curls! I will do a few more treatments to see if I get the same results.

Re: Henna on 4a/4b hair
yea i was thinking of trying cassia first also before hennaing because all the curlies are saying that cassia only condition your hair and lossen the curls not too much. thanks TMS. i love your hair. my hair is as short as yours and bambiix2.
Re: Henna on 4a/4b hair

Re: Henna on 4a/4b hair

Re: Henna on 4a/4b hair
So is it better to use cassia if you're protein sensitive. My hair can't handle protein at all. The last time I did a protein treatment I had a ridiculous amount of breakage. However I am interested in henna, but the fact that it acts as a protein is unsettling. Do you think following up with a DC is the key?

ok henna is not a protein treatment. what henna actually does is bind to your hair protein called keratin, making it much strong, in return causing less breakage and making the hair stronger and more condition. u dont need to worry about henna being a protein cux its not. most people tend to worry about that, but if henna were protein curlynikki would not be using it cus she's protein sensitive and neither would I, not that i have used it yet but im waiting for more hair length to do mine. but i have researched and i found out that henna is not protein but u can substitute it for a protein treatment since it gets the job done as the protein. my haIr is protein sensitive also, but i can use henna since its not a protein. i hope i answer your question. so yes u can use henna or cassia for your hair. the diferent between casia and henna is not that much they both condition, loosen the curl but cassia doesnt change hair color like henna does and henna has longer conditioning effect than cassia, that why most people prefer henna to cassia.

Re: Henna on 4a/4b hair
I am mostly 4b with 4a in the back and I tried henna for the first time last month. I used only henna and mixed it with some organic honey, a little olive oil, and black tea. I didn't notice a color change but did notice some curl loosening. What I love about it is how soft my hair was and still is. I haven't changed my hair routine so I'm attributing the softness to the henna. I'm doing another henna treatment tonight and hope for the same or better results.

Re: Henna on 4a/4b hair
I sport a 4b TWA with pen-spring coils. I believe the henna "released" my coils slightly. But it in NO WAY straightened my hair.
Henna is messy the first few times you do it, but you learn very quickly! LOL!
I henna - have been for a few months of trial and error, and although I experience dryness, I appreciate that I'm using a wholesome natural product instead of the PD dyes that caused my relaxed edges to break off.
PUHLEEEZ make sure you are purchasing BAQ henna for your hair. iT MUST BE 100% henna - no additives or descriptors like "dark henna" or "black henna". Look for body art quality henna.
Natural henna binds to your hair. There are wonderful tutorials on the mehandi dot com website, which will answer MANY of your henna questions.
If you have black hair, henna WILL NOT MAKE YOUR HAIR RED. It may however make it look "warmer" in the sunlight.
The following information is for my henna + indigo process.
Since I have gray hairs, I utilize a TWO STEP PROCESS; I apply my henna paste then rinse with water, then apply my indigo paste. Henna alone colors my grays with a coppery/orange tint. That's why I follow up with indigo. I prefer the "black cat" look.
I get GREAT results from my henna-indigo process. It looks naturally warm-black, not "goth chick" black.
The key is to let your henna "marinate" long, but apply your indigo AS SOON AS THE SURFACE TURNS BLUE!
Indigo releases its dye WITH A QUICKNESS, so apply it within minutes! Use HOT - NOT BOILING WATER on indigo - boiling water RUINS the dye.
I also use distilled water and glass/plastic utensils and bowls during my process.
Apply indigo AFTER RINSING YOUR HENNA OUT WITH PLAIN WATER - save your deep conditioning for LAST. I think shampooing and conditioing in-between the henna-indigo will diminish your results.
I don't use oils in my mix. I make my indigo paste a little looser since it tends to crumble out more when it's pasty.
Once you're ready to remove your henna paste, rinse with WATER and lots of your CHEAP CONDITIONER. DO NOT SHAMPOO.
To avoid dryness, follow up with a luxurious deep conditioning. I AVOID protein conditioners, and instead use a deeply moisturizing conditioner. You may add your favorite oil to the conditioner to aid with the conditioning.
No two heads are the same - trial and error worked for me.
Hope this helps!
Stay blessed!

Re: Henna on 4a/4b hair
I tried henna last night (for the 1st time!!!) and my mix consisted of 200 grams of jamila henna, 2 bags of green tea/1 bag of chamomille (sp?) tea/1 bag of mandarin orange spice tea boiled in 2 cups of water, 2 tablespoons of honey, and 2 teaspoons of olive oil.
I mixed the mixture and let it sit for 1 hour then put it in after i washed my hair with HE hello hydration shampoo and Garnier Fructis Moisture Works conditioner. After I put it in my hair, I had a lot left over! I had enough to put in my 2 little sisters' hair. We all left it in all night and washed it off around 5 in the morning.
I noticed that my curls were loose, but the coloring looked the same:( I noticed that in the sisters hair the henna gave her hair a brown color and we all have dark black hair. Also, my hair felt a bit dry but after my DC the dryness went away.
After my first experince with henna, I plan on using it again! Maybe every 2 weeks? I really would like to know how to get a burgendy color outcome when I use it though?
